Cell Phones Don't Seem to Pose Cancer Risk to Kids: Study (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Children who use cell phones don't seem to face an increased risk of brain cancer, compared to children who don't use them, a new study contends.

But, the study authors and other experts cautioned that more research is needed.

With the increase in cell phone use among kids, some worry that radiation from the devices can increase the risk for brain tumors. Children's brains are still developing, and because their heads are smaller radiofrequency electromagnetic fields may penetrate areas deeper in the brain, some researchers say.

"The [study] results are reassuring, given the widespread use of mobile phones by children and adolescents," said lead author Martin Roosli, an assistant professor at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, Switzerland.

"However," he added, "uncertainties remain regarding long-term use. Thus, further careful monitoring whether brain tumor incidence is increasing in this age group is important."

The findings were published July 27 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

For the study, Roosli's team collected data on 352 children and adolescents aged 7-19 with brain cancer, and compared them to 646 similar children who did not have brain cancer. The children came from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The researchers also interviewed the children and asked them about their cell phone use.

The researchers found that children with brain tumors didn't use cell phone more than those without tumors. Specifically, 75.3 percent of the children with brain tumors said they had used a cell phone more than 20 times before being diagnosed with their tumor. Among those children without cancer, 72.1 percent reported similar cell phone use.

Among children with tumors, 55 percent said they used a cell phone regularly, compared to 51 percent of children without tumors.

Also, there was no increase in the risk for tumors in the area of the brain receiving the most radiation from cell phones, the researchers said.

"However, people who are concerned might consider using cell phones with low radiation emissions or they might consider using an ear piece or using the phone's speaker," Roosli said.

These findings probably won't quell the debate about the potential risk of brain cancer from cell phones.

In May, a panel of experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) said cell phones may cause brain cancer. After reviewing dozens of studies on the subject, the experts classified cell phones as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" and placed them in the same category as the pesticide DDT and gasoline engine exhaust.

Commenting on the new study, John D. Boice Jr., of the International Epidemiology Institute and co-author of an accompanying editorial in the journal, said that "the occurrence of a brain tumor in a child is a devastating diagnosis. Research into the causes of brain tumor and improved treatment regimens should continue. However, there should not be a concern that using a cell phone has caused brain cancer."

There's been no evidence from population data on brain tumor occurrence over the past 20 years to indicate that rates are increasing among children or adults, which would be expected if cell phone use caused brain tumors, Boice said.

"The recent announcement by the WHO has caused widespread confusion and unnecessary alarm, in large part due to a misunderstanding of the category 'possibly carcinogenic,' which is for agents for which there is 'limited evidence for carcinogenicity,'" he explained.

Elizabeth Ward, national vice president of intramural research at the American Cancer Society, called the new research "a very important study that has a great number of strengths, including a population-based contemporary sample and a high participation rate."

"But, as in most areas of epidemiology where complex risk factors are studied, additional studies are needed to develop conclusive evidence about potential risks of mobile phone use. It is important that additional studies be done in children, adolescents and young adults with early life exposure to mobile phones," she added.

Ceremony marks closing of Walter Reed hospital (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The closing of Walter Reed Army Medical Center was described as bittersweet Wednesday as staff members and patients gathered on the hospital's parade grounds in Washington to mark the closing of the Army's flagship hospital after more than a century of providing care.

The hospital's operations are being moved in August to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and to Fort Belvoir, Va. The hospital in Bethesda will be called the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Walter Reed opened in 1909. It has treated military members, their families and presidents. It was scarred by a 2007 scandal about substandard living conditions on its grounds for wounded troops in outpatient care that led to changes in how the military treats the wounded.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Army's flagship hospital where privates to presidents have gone for care, is closing its doors after more than a century.

Hundreds of thousands of the nation's war wounded from World War I to today have received treatment at Walter Reed, including 18,000 troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

President Dwight Eisenhower died there. So did Gens. John J. Pershing and Douglas MacArthur.

It's where countless celebrities, from Bob Hope to quarterback Tom Brady, have stopped to show their respect to the wounded. Through the use of medical diplomacy, the center also has tended to foreign leaders.

The storied hospital, which opened in 1909, was scarred by a 2007 scandal about substandard living conditions on its grounds for wounded troops in outpatient care and the red tape they faced. It led to improved care for the wounded, at Walter Reed and throughout the military. By then, however, plans were moving forward to close Walter Reed's campus.

Two years earlier, a government commission, noting that Walter Reed was showing its age, voted to close the facility and consolidate its operations with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and a hospital at Fort Belvoir, Va., to save money.

Former and current patients and staff members will say goodbye at a ceremony Wednesday on the parade grounds in front of the main concrete and glass hospital complex. Most of the moving will occur in August. On Sept. 15, the Army hands over the campus to the new tenants: the State Department and the District of Columbia. The buildings on campus deemed national historic landmarks will be preserved; others probably will be torn down. The city is expected to develop its section for retail and other uses.

"For many of the staff members, even though they know that this is the future of the military health system, in a way, it's still like losing your favorite uncle, and so there is a certain amount of mourning that is going on and it is an emotional time," said Col. Norvell Coots, commander of the Walter Reed Health Care System.

The new facility will be called the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. It will consolidate many of Walter Reed's current offerings with the Navy hospital.

"Frankly, I will say it's with a heavy heart that Walter Reed closes," said Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of the former president. "I don't know. I know that there was a process for that decision, but we've lost a great, important part of history."

She recalled bringing to the hospital a birthday cake she had baked for her grandfather, who spent the last several months before his death in 1969 in a special suite where politicians and foreign leaders visited him.

There are countless pieces of history throughout the campus.

At the rose garden, some nurses from the Vietnam War era were said to have married their patients. The memorial chapel is where President Harry S. Truman went for his first church service after taking office, following a visit with Pershing, who lived in a suite at Walter Reed for several years, said John Pierce, historian for the Walter Reed Society.

A marker identifies the spot on the hospital grounds where, long before the hospital was built, Confederate sharpshooters fired near President Abraham Lincoln, leading an officer to call Lincoln a "damned fool" and order him to the ground, according a brochure produced by Walter Reed about its history.

President Calvin Coolidge's teenage son died in the hospital from an infected blister he received while playing tennis at the White House, Pierce said. A black-and-white photo from 1960 shows then-Sen. Lyndon Johnson, a vice presidential candidate at the time, visiting the bedside of Vice President Richard Nixon, who was being treated for a staph infection.

Presidents now are sent to Bethesda for treatment because it's considered more secure, said Sanders Marble, senior historian with the Office of Medical History at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

The hospital was named to honor Maj. Walter Reed, an Army physician who treated troops and American Indians on the frontier. Among his medical achievements was life-saving research that proved that yellow fever was spread by mosquito. He died in 1902 at age 51 of complications related to appendicitis with a friend and colleague, Lt. Col. William C. Borden, treating him.

"I'm sure (Borden) felt very guilty about that, and over the course of the next several years, he campaigned to get money for a new hospital and of course, wanted to name it for his good friend Walter Reed," Pierce said.

The original redbrick hospital had about 80 beds, but inpatient capacity grew by the thousands during the wars of the last century. Today, it treats about 775,000 outpatients annually and has an inpatient load of about 150. It wasn't just service members and military retirees treated at the hospital over the decades, but their families, too. Countless babies were born at the hospital into the 1990s.

Rehabilitation for the wounded, including care for amputees, has been an important part of the mission since it opened. The wounded commonly spend a year or longer at the hospital now, although they are more quickly moved to outpatient care.

Photos from World War I show troops at Walter Reed learning skills such as typing and knitting. During World War II, brochures distributed to the war amputees featured pictures of amputees smoking and shaving. The message was, "Your life isn't over, don't get down," Marble said.

Laura Lehigh's late husband, Michael Schmidt, was a lieutenant when he proposed to her during his stay at Walter Reed. He was recovering from a gunshot wound he received in Vietnam in 1968.

In letters to her, he described stinky bedpans, a "new inmate" moving into his ward, a "celebrity of the week" visit from "Tricky Dick Nixon," practical jokes played on student nurses, a champagne party for a triple amputee's 26th birthday and how the orderlies turned patients' beds near a window around so they could watch Johnson enter the hospital to visit Eisenhower.

"Mike always had a wonderful sense of humor, but I think they kind of all aspired to have a sense of humor, those guys who had lost their limbs who didn't know what their lives were going to be like getting out," said Lehigh, 63, in a telephone interview from Kalamazoo, Mich. "I think they had a camaraderie and a sense of humor and an optimism about themselves, if not about life in general."

Despite all the warm feelings, a Washington Post investigation in 2007 uncovered shoddy living conditions in an outpatient ward known as Building 18. Troops were living among black mold and mouse droppings while trying to fend for themselves as they battled a complex bureaucracy of paperwork related to the disability evaluation system.

The report drew scrutiny of all aspects of care offered to the nation's wounded. The scandal embarrassed the Army and the Bush administration and led to the firings of some military leaders.

Afterward, some in Congress pushed for the Pentagon to change course and keep Walter Reed open, but an independent group reviewed the idea and recommended moving forward with Walter Reed's closure plans.

It concluded that the Defense Department was or should have been aware of the widespread problems but neglected them because they knew Walter Reed was scheduled to be closed. Then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates agreed and said there was little wisdom in pouring money into Walter Reed to keep it open indefinitely.

"Far better to make an investment in brand-new, 21st century facilities," Gates told reporters.

Pierce said the quality of medical care at Walter Reed didn't suffer, even leading up to the scandal.

"It was administrative issues and housing issues, and the housing issues were significant," he said. "I don't think anyone would want to say they weren't and it shouldn't have happened, but it was not a quality of care situation."

In addition to improved living conditions, one of the other upgrades after the scandal was the opening of an advanced rehabilitation center for troops with amputations. On a recent day, several amputees, including some who had lost three limbs, were exercising in the room, one even on a skateboard.

Marine Sgt. Rob Jones, 25, is a double amputee from the Afghanistan war who spends much of his days rowing. His goal is to become an FBI agent or make the U.S. Adaptive Rowing Team.

One of more than 440 troops from the recent wars getting outpatient care, he sat on a bench outside the center reading a book. His prosthetics were visible below his shorts.

"I'll probably just remember the people I was working with, the staff here, how much they helped me get back on my feet." Jones said.

The Bloomswell Diaries by Louis L. Buitendag

Review: Imagine your life, only two days after your parents leave you with your uncle, you read the newspaper with a nice cup of tea and see an article about your parents' death. This is the life of Benjamin Sebastian Bloomswell in The Bloomswell Diaries by Louis L. Buitendag who is a great author who put many of the elements to create a great book into one.

The story begins in England, a nice and cozy place to relax and enjoy yourself. Ben's life never happens to change though considering he isn't allowed to leave the house when his parents aren't home (which they never are). His parents always have important meetings to go to for business, ones that Benjamin cannot attend. Now, Ben's life finally has a chance to change as he must go live with his Uncle Lucas in New York City, while his sister Liza goes to Switzerland for a school.

Benjamin has never been separated from his sister, and the only thoughts he ever has are about her and about his parents; he never worries about himself first. Then, one day, he gets taken by a police officer and is thrown in a mysterious building - one without any friendly invitation. Doors and windows are cracked and broken, there are creaky floorboards and stair steps - all the things you need for a haunted house. When Benjamin realizes he's in an orphanage, countless questions come to mind. How did it come to this? Why did he have to go to New York (the only question he wonders too)? How is his sister doing? Where is Uncle Lucas?

The Bloomswell Diaries is a book that in not only filled with suspense, but it also incudes a little humor and plenty of imagery to make it feel like you are the main character. Once I started reading, I just couldn't stop! The book is very well detailed, creating strong mental images of all the places Benjamin visits throughout the book. This helps to make the story feel more realistic and compelling. The Bloomswell Diaries is an awesome book, and I would recommend it to any middle school reader.

Comprehending Scuba Products ? A Fundamental Overview | iBlognDax ...

Proper scuba diving begins with understanding the place you will be diving, and also the type of equipment you will need in order to be successful. As a general rule, always stick to general diving conditions that match your skill level and knowledge of how and where to dive. The best way to get this knowledge as soon as possible is to take a certified diving course to learn the basics.

Similar to school, the diving instructor must give you a basic competency test that you need to pass. So you will have lots of opportunities to ask questions if you need help with anything. Scuba diving can be fun, but right now, let?s take a look at the devices and equipment you will need to acquire.

Don?t think you can just buy a pair of goggles as part of your diving gear. Goggles, commonly used for snorkeling, are not even in the same class as the modern dive mask. Modern technology has really stepped in and taken over the design of the scuba mask, with awesome results. When we were researching this article, the top-of-the-line mask for recreational and sport divers was the Neptune Space G.divers full-face mask. It comes with a state-of-the-art integrated regulator and a 4-position adjustable exhaust valve. Advances and innovations in optics increases the amount of visible light that is passed through the visor to close to 95%. The Space G.divers masks make ear clearing easy with their exclusive, patented 3-D equalization system. Jacques Cousteau designed a two-hose type of scuba demand valve that was the first of its type to be put into general usage. As it?s name implies, this configuration has two cylinders and two breathing tubes. This design features a large circular valve assembly that, at least in Europe and America, was fastened to the top of the cylinders with an A-Clamp. The important function of the second hose was exhalation that helped the air pressure of the breathing hose stay the same as the outside water. When the equipment was in the design stages, special factors had to be addressed to ensure the equipment would operate safely. For example, most units have a one-way valve placed into the mouthpiece to keep air or water from going into the inhalation tube.

Demand valves are very small pieces of equipment that are on your mouthpiece which regulate the air that you breathe. Veteran divers are very fond of using what is called the octopus demand valve which is a spare valve used as backup when diving. At the top of each oxygen cylinder tank, a primary regulator is attached with multiple hoses. It is always good to have extra hoses, not to mention a spare demand valve, when scuba diving in unknown territory. Designed for emergencies, this is a great idea for all divers regardless of their experience level. For the most part, this type of device or spare will be colored a bright yellow so it is easy to spot and indicative of its purpose.

Technical diving is a captivating field and in our estimation not for rank beginners. Varying scuba equipment needed for this are many cylinders that contain certain gases. A gas called Trimex for instance is to be used only at the deeper depths. In addition, a vessel of oxygen that is pure could be hauled and employed while ascending stops for decompression. Obviously the extra cylinders can present special problems for achieving proper buoyancy. That is why you will see technical divers wearing a high capacity buoyancy compensator (BC). Make sure to take into consideration the environment in which you will be diving when you select your scuba diving gear. Regardless, it?s imperative that you understand completely how each piece of equipment you purchase operates. It?s true you must fully understand what each piece of equipment is designed to do and how it operates. But even more important, you must have a grasp on the behavior of the equipment when you are underwater.

To really get the most out of your scuba diving activity, you?re going to need to have a vehicle large enough to transport all of your gear. This is especially valid if you are considering carrying your loved ones or your friends in addition to all your deep-sea diving equipment. Be sure you have a big passenger van or SUV to make sure your scuba diving trips go off without a hitch.

What ever your motive, if you are hunting for a few amazing 7 seater cars for sale, then head to the incredible 7 seater cars for sale before each of them disappear.

Heroes & Legends: Myrtis Dightman-Rodeo-GoTeamsGo Sports Fan Forum

Forty years ago, Myrtis Dightman won the Calgary Stampede.

He remembers Calgary as a wonderful place - not just because he had never been there, but because of the warm reception he received.

Dightman, a black man, wasn't always welcome when he came to ride bulls.

The 76-year-old has been described as the Jackie Robinson of professional bull riding. He was the first African-American to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo, and in 2003, was inducted into the PBR Ring of Honor.

"I just couldn't believe it," he said of his Calgary experience. "If I needed anything, they would help me. People in Calgary are real nice people. They would take me in and let me stay with them. The guys that were living up there would take me over to their house and let me stay right with them."

That hospitality was in stark contrast to most other rodeos.

Despite his incredible talent, Dightman was often made to ride after the events were over and the crowds had left.

"It wasn't always easy," he said. "It wasn't the rodeo people. It was the stock contractors." Some bull men weren't thrilled at the idea of a black man covering their prized stock.

Nine-time World Champion Ty Murray said that because of the prejudice he encountered, Dightman probably only won a third of what he was due.

Quite often, when the draw was announced, Dightman would be matched up with bulls that had never been ridden. Only years later did he learn that those draws had been fixed.

"I didn't know. I thought that's the way it was drawn up," he explained, before laughing. "It didn't make a difference. I won anyhow."

Dightman, like his late father O.D., grew up working cattle on a ranch outside his hometown of Crockett, Texas.

The family never owned a ranch of their own. His father was a hired laborer, and taught his son what it meant to earn his keep. The younger Dightman was rewarded with the opportunity to take part in trail rides.

Later on, he started working as a bullfighter before deciding on a bull riding career.

He faced the racism with his chin held high. It wasn't that he was particularly tolerant, but he was determined to win over doubters and detractors by proving he had the same characteristics as any other American cowboy.

He remembers receiving a call once from a rodeo secretary, asking if he had encountered any problems.

Surprised by inquiry, he replied, "No ma'am."

He was confused when she asked about when he rode, and if anyone else rode with him after the events had concluded.

"After that, if they held me back, they had to hold three white guys back," he said. "That's what broke it."

Ty Murray and former NFL great Walt Garrison, both of whom have befriended Dightman and his family, are saddened by the stories they've heard about Dightman's challenges, and have worked to see that the he is recognized for his accomplishments.

"In every account that I've ever been told, Myrtis always got hosed just because he was a black guy," Murray said.

Despite the obstacles, Dightman twice finished third in the PRCA world standings, and in addition to the Calgary Stampede, he also won Cheyenne Frontier Days.

But according to Dightman, his finest hour as a professional bull rider came long after he finished his career.

In 2003, Murray contacted Dightman's son with news that the PBR planned to induct his father into the Ring of Honor. But as far as Myrtis knew, they had merely invited him out to Las Vegas for an event.

"I said, 'OK,'" he explained. "I wondered where he got the money from, and Ty Murray still never told me anything. They just said, 'Come on, let's go to the Finals.' They kept me in the dark."

That night, Dightman listened to Murray address the crowd. He talked about a great bull rider who had never gotten what he deserved.

"I was looking around and thinking, 'Who is he talking about?'" Dightman said. "Then he said, 'Myrtis Dightman.' I could have cried.

"I put that ring on and I never did take it off."

Two months ago, the much-loved Dightman was honored with a bronze statue in his hometown - a project that was spearheaded by Garrison. It was an event that, according to Dightman, tongue firmly planted in cheek, "even the white people enjoyed."

"It's nice to see Myrtis get the recognition," Murray said.

To acknowledge the 40-year anniversary of his win in Calgary, Dightman had hoped to visit the event for the first time since.

But his mother Ada Lee Polk, 95, is in a nursing home, and his older sister Early Mae, 79, passed away on Wednesday.

"I just hate that I couldn't make it this year," said Dightman. "I would have gone to Calgary this year, but the good Lord gave me something else to do.

"You know, He's kind of in charge of everything."

Alon Ben-Meir: The Israel and Hamas Untenable Status Quo

Israel and Hamas are currently locked in a perpetual standoff. Hamas is emboldened by the flurry of international attention on the situation in Gaza, despite the improved conditions following the ease of the blockade by Israel after the first flotilla episode and Egypt's opening of the border crossing. The Hamas-Fatah unity talks, currently on hold and in danger of collapse, have aided the transformation of the international perception of Hamas as a terror organization to that of a legitimate political party. So too has Hamas' refrain from violence against Israel. However, without an outright rejection of terror and recognition that Israel cannot be destroyed, Hamas' growth as a political force for the Palestinian people will remain limited and potentially mired in failure. Similarly, without Israel recognizing that lasting security is unlikely unless Hamas is included in the political process, efforts to advance a two-state solution will be fruitless. Overcoming these obstacles will require new thinking to find a formula that enables each side to save face in altering their positions to move forward in a political process.

Hamas has been strengthened by the international community increasingly discarding the notion that it is a terror organization and realizing that it must, nevertheless, be brought into a political process if efforts to achieve regional peace and security are to succeed. The recent attempt to deliver aid via a second flotilla, (and when that failed via a 'fly-tilla') was not about delivering aid, but rather about demonstrating solidarity with the people in Gaza. Despite its failure to reach Gaza, the international attention paid to the activists in-and-of itself is a victory for Hamas' portrayal of the people of Gaza as innocent victims of cruel Israeli oppression. Gaza's economy jumped by 16 percent at the end of 2010 after Israel eased the blockade last summer, but nearly 70 percent of the population still relies on handouts and nearly half of the work force remains unemployed. Today, the focus on Gaza is on the economic situation, not on Hamas' rejection of Israel's right to exist or its refusal to release captured Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit.

Hamas has been further strengthened by the ongoing Palestinian unity talks, which it has entered into without relinquishing any of its avowed positions to oppose peace with the State of Israel. Hamas' chief, Khaled Mashaal has in the past told reporters that he would be willing to accept a two-state formula along the 1967 lines, but without acting on it to bring about conflict resolution. Meanwhile, Hamas members have denigrated international efforts to gain Palestinian statehood at the United Nations and remained fiercely opposed to Israel's existence. These inconsistent postures have enabled Hamas to navigate international circles with the aura of possibility that it could be a partner for peace, even without espousing a unified, clear position or easing its hard-line stance as a 'resistance movement' against Israel. This ambiguous posturing causes Hamas, like its partner in arms Hezbollah, to force Israel to spend disproportionately on defense and maintain a state of readiness with ever escalating debilitating financial and human cost.

However, Hamas' recent gains may be reaching an apex. First, the Hamas-Fatah unity agreement is in jeopardy today over Hamas' refusal to keep Salaam Fayyad as prime minster and to adopt a technocratic government that might be acceptable to the Palestinian Authority's Western donors. A recent poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research indicated that 61 percent of Palestinians want "the new government of reconciliation to follow the peace policies and agendas of President Abbas and the PLO rather than Hamas." Another poll by the Center indicated that 45 percent prefer Salaam Fayyad to remain prime minister as opposed to only 22 percent support for Hamas' candidate, Jamal Khodari. Since nearly 60 percent of the Palestinian public expects the unity agreement to succeed, Hamas risks being blamed for its failure.

Further, Hamas' recent downplaying of efforts to gain a unilateral declaration of statehood at the United Nations is inconsistent with Palestinian public opinion. A week ago, Hamas' Ismail Haniyeh called the plan for statehood "a mere mirage," but 65 percent of the Palestinians support the move. Whereas unity talks were initially seen as a mechanism to improve the prospects of the UN move, Palestinians are increasingly realizing that Hamas could be placing the UN effort -and future international aid -in serious jeopardy. Finally, Hamas has been weakened by the uprising in Syria which has thrust its patron, Bashar Assad in a fight for the survival of his regime, which has consistently provided political and logistical support for the organization and asylum to its leaders.

Most importantly, Hamas' growth is stuck between two realizations. The first realization is that under no circumstances can Israel be destroyed. Even more, Hamas knows that should it reengage in a campaign of terror against and seriously threaten Israel, Jerusalem will not hesitate to respond by decapitating its leadership in an effort to wipe out the movement's core structure, regardless of the international condemnation that would likely follow. Furthermore, as long as Hamas wears the 'terror group' label assigned to it by the Western world, its ability to shape the future of Palestine remains handicapped. The second realization is that Hamas knows that it too cannot be destroyed. Indeed, although Hamas' public support has been steadily declining during the past several years and it may not garner more than 25 percent of the votes if elections were held today, it maintains a strong grass-roots movement. Whether through a unity government or free and fair elections, Hamas and its ideology of 'resistance' will persist as a potent force in the Palestinian body politic. The question facing Hamas today is how to reconcile these two contradictory realities: that the organization will endure, but its ultimate objective--the destruction of Israel--will never be fulfilled.

A similar question regarding Hamas faces Israel. While previous and current Israeli governments know that it can wipe out Hamas' leadership, it cannot destroy its ideology, and as long as it remains on the outside of the political process, it can spoil any Israeli efforts to advance negotiations with its Fatah rival. Israel has succeeded in containing Hamas' violent activity, including rocket attacks, due to its considerable deterrence, but it is at least in part constrained by the international opprobrium that has followed its blockade of Gaza, which has further served to strengthen Hamas' position in the international arena.

The result of this policy limbo gripping both sides is a hardened status quo. Each side remains vigilant and troubled by the actions of the other, but is unable to simply wish their adversary away. At the same time, neither Israel nor Hamas is prepared to publicly recognize this fact and adjust their policies accordingly. Therefore, instead of re-framing their policies and public narratives, each side is merely treading water by maintaining these contradictory postures. What is needed is a face saving way out of this deadlock. The status quo will not produce peace or security. If Israel wants peace with Palestinians based on a two-state solution, now or in future, it simply cannot make peace with half of the Palestinians and leave Gaza out of the equation. Even if the Palestinian Authority manages to gain recognition without unity agreement in place, a divided Palestinian state is not a viable option. Meanwhile, if a unity government is reached, the United States and a number of European nations will have the pretext to oppose the UN initiative on the grounds that Hamas has not met the three Quartet conditions: renouncing violence, recognizing Israel and accepting past agreements.

As a result, on the surface the status quo between Israel and Hamas appears sustainable for the foreseeable future. However, the elevated expectations caused by the lead up to the United Nations General Assembly, the revolutions of the Arab Spring, and the decrease of Hamas' marginalization internationally could all lead this status quo to be shattered come October. If Hamas loses any potential of becoming a player in shaping the Palestinian national cause, they are likely to upset the process in order to maintain their relevance. That is why new thinking must be applied, in order to create a face saving formula that will enable each side to adjust its positions.

The long dormant Arab Peace Initiative could serve as the basis for such a formula. The Initiative could enable Hamas to soften its stance on the political process with Israel by aligning itself with the stated position of the entire Arab league, but without having to relent on its long-held opposition to the three Quartet conditions. In turn, the Israeli public, notwithstanding the objections of the Netanyahu government, should be persuaded to accept the centrality, and in fact the indispensability, of the Arab Peace Initiative in principle as the basis for renewed negotiations with all who support it as a framework for talks. Israel could do so with its own reservations that aspects of the Initiative, like the ultimate state of Palestinian refugees and secure borders, as in the past, must be negotiated. In fact, doing so could provide Israel with a more generic formula for talks than the security and borders-first approached advance by President Obama. The acceptance of the Arab Peace Initiative by either side would be a game-changer that could inject life into the Palestinian movement on the one hand, as well as represent the Israeli initiative that many are calling for on the other. Creating such a game-changer will not only require political leadership on the part of Israel and Hamas, but also outside pressure and encouragement.

The United States, with the support of the EU, should be pressing Israel to adopt this formula. Bearing in mind that the Netanyahu government is not likely to make any progress toward a two-state solution, these efforts must begin now in preparation for the next Israeli elections in late 2012. To be sure, educating the Israeli public about the critical importance of the API and the perilous impasse the Netanyahu government has created would engender vitally important discussion in Israel about the desperate need for a change of direction.

In the same token, the Arab states, especially Egypt and Saudi Arabia, (Egypt because of its proximity, centrality in Arab affairs and security interests, and Saudi Arabia because it's the custodian of Sunni Islam) must press Hamas to do the same. Given Hamas increasingly precarious situation in wake of what is happening from within and outside the organization on a regional scale, its leadership is looking also for a face-saving way out. The API could offer Hamas exactly just that not only because it allows the organization to join the Arab fold but also because of their changing posture toward a solution to their conflict with Israel which has become increasingly closer to the API. As I indicated in previous writings, Turkey too could play a significant role in persuading Hamas to make the leap at this particular juncture.

Since the Gaza war, Israel and Hamas have been engaged in a chess game, with each side making marginal gains, and losing critical pieces vis a vis the other side. Today, they are in a deadlock, with neither side able to put the other in checkmate. The Gaza war showed clearly that Israel cannot destroy Hamas, just as it showed that Hamas' acts of terror have enormous consequences for the Palestinian people. While the current standoff appears sustainable, it is not. Beginning a detente between the two sides will require finding a common denominator that could be utilized as a face saving measure for adapting positions without appearing to have relented to the demands of the other side.

The Arab Peace Initiative offers many common denominators that both Israel and Hamas can relate to and accept. Although Israel and Hamas today are not politically prepared to accept it, their friends and allies in the United States and the Arab world and Turkey respectively should begin pressing them to prepare to do so. Otherwise a dangerous, violent explosion could occur as the current status quo is not sustainable and undoubtedly will unravel. The only question is when?

Piece of Mind: Is the Internet Replacing Our Ability to Remember?

Internet, memory, triviaTOTAL RECALL?: The advent of the Internet and near-ubiquitous information at our fingertips makes it less critical for us to commit items to memory. Using the Internet as a mental crutch is not necessarily a bad thing, according to researchers. Image: IMAGE COURTESY OF ALEX HINDS, VIA ISTOCKPHOTO.COM

Has the Internet dumbed down society or simply become an external storage unit that enhances the human brain's memory capacity? With Google, Internet Movie Database and Wikipedia at our beck and call via smart phones, tablets and laptops, the once essential function of committing facts to memory has become little more than a flashback to flash cards. This shift is not necessarily a bad thing, nor is it irreversible, according to a team of researchers whose study on search engines and learning appears in the July 15 issue of Science.

Led by Columbia University psychologist Betsy Sparrow, the researchers conducted a series of experiments whose results suggest that when people are faced with difficult questions, they are likely to think that the Internet will help them find the answers. In fact, those who expect to able to search for answers to difficult questions online are less likely to commit the information to memory. People tend to memorize answers if they believe that it is the only way they will have access to that information in the future. Regardless of whether they remember the facts, however, people tend to recall the Web sites that hold the answers they seek.

In this way, the Internet has become a primary form of external or "transactive" memory (a term coined by Sparrow's one-time academic advisor, social psychologist Daniel Wegner), where information is stored collectively outside the brain. This is not so different from the pre-Internet past, when people relied on books, libraries and one another?such as using a "lifeline" on the game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire??for information. Now, however, besides oral and printed sources of information, a lion's share of our collective and institutional knowledge bases reside online and in data storage.

The idea for Sparrow's research sprang from a common occurrence in many homes?a few years ago she was watching a movie with her husband and saw an actress whose face she could not quite place. Using Internet Movie Database on her laptop, she quickly discovered that the actress was Angela Lansbury (debuting in 1944's Gaslight), who went on to star in dozens of movies and the popular Murder, She Wrote TV show of the 1980s and '90s.

What would Sparrow's alternatives have been if the Internet never existed? Most likely, if she could not eventually come up with the answer herself, she would have asked a friend or family member for help. Another option would have been to consult a cinema reference book. Or she would have simply had to live with that nagging curiosity and moved on.

The situation with the Internet is in many ways not all that different than it ever was, Sparrow says. "It's different in the sense that information is much more available than it was," she says. "In the past you would have to go through the filing system in your brain, maybe with the help of someone else to try to remember."

Some people are troubled that information gleaned online plays too large a role in their fact-access process, yet this reliance on external memory seems to bother them less if the information resides in the brain of another person. "It's not as salient to people that we do this with other people, but it's obvious to them that we do this with the Internet," Sparrow says.

Besides, memorization is overrated, according to Sparrow. "Obviously we need some baseline skill in memorizing things, but I personally have never seen all that much intellectual value in memorizing things," she says, adding that it is far more important to understand information on a conceptual level. As an instructor, she has seen how some students struggle with cognition related to the things she teaches, whereas they would do much better if they simply had to memorize a bunch of answers. "Memorizing is the easier thing to do, which is why students do it," she says.

Sparrow continues to research the impact on learning if instructors remove the expectation of memorization. "Will students better be able to learn focusing on conceptualizing and understanding information rather than simply remembering it?" she asks. "More likely, if a person does not think the information will be available later, they will try to memorize it, often at the expense of understanding the concepts."

And if our gadgets were to fail due to a planet-wide electromagnetic pulse tomorrow, we would still be all right. People may rely on their mobile phones to remember friends' and family members' phone numbers, for example, but the part of the brain responsible for such memorization has not been atrophied, she says. "It's not like we've lost the ability to do it."

John Suler, a psychology professor at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., and author of the online book The Psychology of Cyberspace, agrees. "I suspect that we're still going to remember information that's important to us, while relying on the Internet to verify what we think might be true or have forgotten, and to provide new information to which we were never exposed," he says.

Perhaps the more pressing issue is whether people will develop the ability to scrutinize online information. "If you look long and hard enough, you will find a Web site that validates almost anything you might want to believe, whether it's true or not," Suler says. "It's also clear that cyberspace is filled with differences of opinion, contradictory 'facts,' and the propagation of information from one site to another that gives the illusion of consensual validation."

In this respect, the Internet is just like any other memory system?the need for critical thinking does not diminish, regardless of where the information is stored.

Apple makes first 'locationgate' legal payout, less than $1000 ...

Apple has made its first legal payout to an iPhone user after being accused of collecting and storing location data last year. A South Korean man is the recipient, apparently, of a settlement consisting of a whopping 1 million won, which only turns out to be about US$946 (as of this writing). Still, this is the first legally required payout on Apple's part -- the check was signed last month by Apple Korea, apparently.

There is also a class action lawsuit in Korea that's attempting to get off the ground (though was stymied, apparently, by a site that went down under the traffic), and, especially with the news of this payout, there's probably other legal action going on around the rest of the world as well.

Don't be too quick to dial up that lawyer, though -- Korea has some pretty strict data sharing laws, and collecting location information like this from users is clearly illegal there, whereas in the U.S. or other countries, the law might not be so clear on what companies can and can't do with user data. It's unlikely that this is the last payout Apple will make, but just because they paid here doesn't mean they'll be losing every judgement on this one.
