Reports: Delta in talks for Virgin Atlantic stake

(AP) ? Delta Air Lines Inc. is mulling the purchased of a 49 percent stake in British airline Virgin Atlantic Airways from Singapore Airlines Ltd., according to media reports.

The remaining 51 percent of Virgin Atlantic is owned by billionaire Richard Branson, who founded the airline in 1984.

Singapore has been considering selling its stake in Virgin for several years and has talked with Delta about a sale in the past, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Virgin has been looking for a possible suitor, too. It hired investment firm Deutsche Bank in 2010 to explore its options.

Buying Virgin is attractive to a carrier like Delta because of its potential to unlock more access to London's Heathrow airport, a key international gateway. Virgin is the second-biggest airline there after British Airways.

Alabama vs. Notre Dame. The BCS championship game couldn't get much bigger.

The Crimson Tide locked up a spot in the title game in Miami on Jan. 7 with a 32-28 victory over Georgia for the Southeastern Conference championship Saturday.

Sunday's selection show is just a formality.

The hype can begin now for what could be the most-watched BCS title game since the system was implemented in 1998. It'd be hard to find two more popular programs and a more enticing matchup.

The top-ranked Fighting Irish (12-0) have won eight AP national titles ? matching Alabama for the most ? but none since 1988. They'll be playing in their first BCS championship game.

Alabama (12-1) is making its third BCS title game appearance in four years. The Crimson Tide is trying to become the first team to win back-to-back BCS titles, and three in four years.

"We created a great opportunity for ourselves," Alabama coach Nick Saban said after his Tide beat the Bulldogs at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

The Irish and Tide have played six times, though not since 1987. Notre Dame is 5-1 against 'Bama, including a 24-23 victory in the Sugar Bowl in 1973 that gave the Irish a national championship. They also played in the Orange Bowl in 1975, and the Irish won 13-11.

The buildup for this one, however, will be unmatched.

"I'm pretty sure it gets the old-heads excited, people that are in their 50s and 60s," Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley told The Chicago Tribune. "It's going to be a historic game."

A return to glory for Brian Kelly's Fighting Irish or a dynasty for Saban's Tide? Seven straight BCS titles for the SEC or the end of a 23-year national championship drought for Notre Dame?

There will no doubt be plenty of people tuning in to find out.

The highest rated BCS championship game was Southern California, going for three straight national titles and back-to-back BCS championships, against Texas in 2006 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. That game drew a 21.7 Nielsen rating.

Alabama's BCS title win over Texas in 2010 drew a 17.17 rating, a close third behind the 17.4 Florida-Ohio State drew in 2007.

Considering Notre Dame's regular-season finale against USC had a 10.3 rating, higher than any of the BCS bowls last season other than the championship game, it's a safe to say this year's championship game has a chance to blow by the record.

The rest of the BCS lineup also fell into place on championship weekend.

No. 7 Kansas State took the Big 12's BCS bid with a 42-24 victory at home against Texas. Collin Klein ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, making a final case for the Heisman Trophy.

The Wildcats are headed to the Fiesta Bowl, and Oklahoma could give the Big 12 two BCS teams.

Earlier Saturday, the No. 12 Sooners won 24-17 at TCU to finish the regular season 10-2 and share the Big 12 title.

On Friday night, Stanford grabbed a spot in the Rose Bowl and the chances for a BCS buster decreased.

Northern Illinois' 44-37 victory in double overtime against Kent State on Friday night gave the Huskies the Mid-American Conference title, and ended the Golden Flashes' BCS hopes.

Kent State needed to move up one spot in the BCS standings to No. 16 to earn an automatic bid. Northern Illinois came into the weekend 21st in the standings. The Huskies have a chance to get into the top 16 and into the BCS, too ? but it will be tough.

Boise State is shooting to be a BCS buster again as well. The Broncos beat Nevada 27-21 to earn a share of the Mountain West title. The Broncos, who were 20th in the BCS standings, would need to break into the top 16 and finish ahead of the MAC champs.

The chances for a BCS buster improved thanks to Wisconsin, which pounded No. 14 Nebraska 70-31 in the Big Ten championship game Saturday night. The Badgers will go to the Rose Bowl for the third straight season, and the Cornhuskers, 12th in the previous BCS standings, might be in store for a long fall. That could boost the chances of Northern Illinois or Boise State.

If there is no BCS buster bid, the Sooners (10-2) look like a logical choice to be given an at-large bid. No. 15 Clemson (10-2) could also be in the mix for an at-large bid.

Oregon (11-1) and Florida (11-1) are locks to be at-large selections.

No. 13 Florida State is headed to the Orange Bowl after beating Georgia Tech 21-15 in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.

Louisville earned the Big East's BCS bid by beating Rutgers on Thursday night, 20-17.

Baselayers Clothing For Skiing Activities ? Recreation and Sports

It's vital to choose the proper base layers clothing for outside activities. Individuals will wish to pay careful attention to the weather outside and the sort of activity to select the most correct fit. These type of underwear are vital to insulating the individual against the outdoor elements. Particularly in cold weather conditions, acceptable underwear can protect against frostbite.

For winter activities it's very important to pick clothes that are durable and can stand up against cruel elements. People who enjoy skiing or snowboarding will want to take into consideration not simply the temperature, but the type of movement that's required for such activity. A person will need the clothes to fit snugly. If the base layer are too loose than they will not do a sufficient job of insulating.

It's critical to control the internal body heat when performing winter activities which will keep the individual outside for a long period of time. In the case of snowboarding or skiing, somebody should plan on wearing up to three layers of clothing. Individuals should give serious attention to their torso, as this area of the body will keep heat trapped in the body. Avoid any materials made of cotton, as this may only absorb moisture. If an individual were to fall in the snow and become wet a cotton undergarment will keep the moisture locked in and make the person even less warm.

Moisture-wicking material is the best to use for the inner-most layer of clothing. Polyester or polypropylene is synthetic and will keep the body dry. Long sleeves will keep the whole arm warm, and a rounded collar instead of a turtleneck will make allowances for simpler layering. For comfort, make sure that the first layer is soft and doesn't cause any epidermal irritation. Keep the fit tight to be sure that the body is getting insulated correctly.

Individuals will need to remember the legs when getting ready to dress for their outing. Avoid jeans as they will trap moisture and essentially become frozen on the body if an individual were to fall in the snow. Long johns or leggings are appropriate underclothes for winter activities.. If the fit is snug enough than they'll keep someone warm underneath wind and waterproof pants.

If feet get cold than the whole body will get cold, so it is critical to wear socks that will reach mid-calf. Socks should be made of manmade material to avoid too much sweat. Stay away from wool socks as they are going to be too awkward. Generally there isn't any need to wear a second layer of socks if the 1st layer is the right material and length.

The cost of undergarments can be pricey. Nevertheless the items should last for a few years and can protect the body better than more cost-effective items. Individuals should go shopping at retailers that specialize in the sort of activity for which they want to partake.

To keep the body warm and dry it is vital to select the correct base layers clothing for winter activities. Chatting to others who enjoy the same sport, as well as executives in the field, will help the individual to make the correct selection.

Benefits of Vision Training | Natural Holistic Health Blog

Benefits of Vision TrainingHealthy eyes and good eyesight are very important for a person to see clearly. One of the studies conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reveals that 94% of the United States population aged 12 years or older generally has a good vision, but the remaining are visually impaired.

What is Vision Training?

Also known as visual training, vision therapy is a kind of rehabilitative treatment or therapy for the eyes. The therapy is based on progressive training i.e. the exercises are easiest at first and become complex gradually. Vision training is intended to increase coordination and flexibility in the eye muscles.

People taking vision training gradually learn to control the eye muscles and can overcome many different kinds of visual impairment at the end of this therapy.

Why do People Need Vision Training?

Some people are born with weak eye muscles, while some suffer from the condition after an accident or trauma to the eye. You are also aware of the fact that all muscles in your body, including eye muscles become weak as a natural part of the aging process. With the help of vision therapy, most people who suffer from weak eye muscles can learn ways to control their eye movements in a better way.

Can Vision Therapy be Used With Eye Glasses or Contact Lenses?

Yes, vision therapy can be used even if the person is using glasses or contact lenses. Contact Lenses are much more competitively priced if you shop around at online suppliers.

Is Vision Therapy a New Concept?

Vision therapy has been around since the mid 18th century. However, the modern concepts were introduced in the United States in 1928. Often vision training is only limited to children but the fact is that it can also benefit adults. Your physician is in the best position to decide whether or not vision training is right for you.

What Can You Expect?

Vision therapy is very useful but it also takes time. Regardless of your age, you have to understand that your condition does not occur suddenly. However, you can overcome the problem by practicing vision therapy. Remember, it may take long before you see an improvement, but the key is to never give up.

Vision therapy works by stretching the unused eye muscles. It also relaxes muscles that are over strained. You will be trained to focus both the eyes together on near and far away objects. Emphasis will be given to the range you find blurry.

Your vision therapy can involve practice sessions with the vision therapist or the doctor as well as ?homework? exercises. It can take up to six weeks before you notice an improvement in vision problems. The length of your practice session is usually determined by your physician or vision therapist. You can expect drastic improvement after 10 to 15 weeks of practice sessions.

Your physician may assign you a number of exercises to do at home. Usually homework assignments take 15 to 30 minutes and you have to repeat the exercises 4 or 5 times in a week. Again, this schedule is decided by your physician or vision therapist.

Young kids need to be motivated by parents and teachers and it is important that kids consider vision therapy and homework exercises as fun. This therapy can be a real challenge even for adults therefore motivation is really crucial to continue the progress at a steady rate.

Who Can Benefit From Vision Training?

Children who are diagnosed with learning, reading or writing problems can benefit from visual training. Even autistic kids and those suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have chances of developing problems related to vision. Vision therapy can be used to manage the problems quite effectively.

A large number of professional athletes also seek vision therapy to improve their vision and reaction time. This therapy is also beneficial to improve hand and eye coordination.

Computer users, even those using contact lenses can use vision therapy to reduce discomfort due to repeated eye strain. Vision therapy is also helpful for adults who suffer from strokes or head injuries as a result of an accident.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama could name his next defense secretary in December, far sooner than expected and perhaps in a high-powered package announcement with his choice for secretary of state, several senior administration officials tell The Associated Press.

The personnel moves, coupled with Obama's coming choice for a new leader of the Central Intelligence Agency, will be viewed by U.S. allies and enemies alike as signal of how he will pursue national security in a second term. All of his choices will be subject to Senate confirmation, which itself is a significant factor in his decisions.

The top names under consideration for defense secretary are former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, former top Pentagon official Michele Flournoy, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. Among those, Kerry is seen as desiring the secretary of state's job more.

While Obama has made no final decisions on Cabinet vacancies, announcements could come as soon as next week.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has made clear he did not intend to stay for a second term but he has never publicly discussed the timing of his departure, widely thought to be down the road in 2013. Yet Obama's thinking on Panetta's replacement has quietly advanced, aided by a strong list of candidates, officials said.

One senior U.S. official said Panetta is expected to stay on the job at least through the Jan 21 inauguration ceremony for Obama, another sign that the president is close to naming a new defense chief. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss internal White House thinking.

Far more political attention has centered on the chief diplomatic job of secretary of state.

Obama is believed almost certain to pick Kerry or U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, with Obama's considerations of his choice so closely held that even members of his innermost circle are asking each other which way he may go. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has long announced her plans to leave and hopes to do so soon.

The White House is considering packaging the state and defense choices with the flourish of a unified announcement, if the pieces come together. The president wants to choose nominees not just on their merits, the officials said, but on how well their styles and philosophy mesh with other members of the Cabinet who will hold overlapping portfolios.

That is particularly true for the leaders of state and defense. They are the top faces of his security apparatus, the leaders who bracket Obama at Cabinet meetings, the ones central to an integrated approach toward coping with international crises. Officials close to Obama said a joint announcement could present a stronger message.

For the State job, Obama has strong ties to both candidates. Rice is a close friend, and aides say the two are in lockstep on foreign policy. Kerry was an early backer of Obama during his 2008 presidential bid, a valuable envoy abroad, a help in his re-election bid and a contender to be his first secretary of state.

A big factor in Obama's decision is how much early capital he would have to spend on a confirmation fight. While Kerry has the backing of his longtime Senate colleagues, Rice is facing withering criticism from some Republicans for her initial account of the deadly attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, in September.

A contentious confirmation fight could send Rice into the job with weakened support and use up some of the tough votes he may need from allies in the Senate later. Still, Obama has already set a tone that he may choose Rice regardless.

A decision on new leadership for the CIA is not as urgent. That's partly because Acting Director Michael Morell is still dealing with the fallout of David Petraeus' resignation over an extramarital affair and the battles with lawmakers over the events that led to the death of four Americans in Libya.

Morell is highly respected within the administration and seen as a top contender.

Other candidates are the White House's top counterterrorism and homeland security advisor, John Brennan, and the Pentagon's top intelligence official, Undersecretary for Defense Intelligence Michael Vickers, a former CIA officer and Green Beret. Also possible is the former senator Hagel, should he miss out for the top Pentagon job. Hagel co-chairs Obama's intelligence advisory board and held senior positions on the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees.

A near-term shakeup at the Defense Department would come as the Pentagon faces a flurry of decisions on troop levels in Afghanistan and budgets. The looming end-of-the year spending cuts the White House and Congress are seeking to avert would hit the Pentagon particularly hard.

At Defense, Hagel would give Obama a whiff of bipartisanship, and could be the only Republican in the Cabinet if Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood leaves, as expected.

Flournoy would be the first woman to lead the Defense Department. She served in the Pentagon under Panetta as undersecretary of defense for policy, resigning early this year. She served as a foreign policy adviser to Obama during his re-election campaign.

Carter, who has served as deputy defense secretary for the past year, is a protege of former Defense Secretary William Perry.
