Hoax prompts free tacos in Alaska town

FILE - This Wednesday, June 6, 2012, file photo shows a Taco Bell restaurant in Richmond, Va. After a hoax had residents of Betlhel, Alaska thinking they would soon be getting Taco Bell, executives for the chain restaurant have arranged to fly enough ingredients from Anchorage to make 10,000 free tacos for a feast on Sunday, July 1, 2012. (AP) ? Residents of Bethel, Alaska, know from cable TV ads what the major fast-food chains offer: chicken at KFC, burgers at McDonald's and tacos at Taco Bell.

They just haven't been able to get any of it.

The city of 6,200 people is about 40 miles inland from the Bering Sea in far western Alaska, and the closest fast food other than a Subway sandwich shop is in Anchorage, 400 miles and a $500 round-trip plane ticket away.

So they were elated to learn that Taco Bell was soon going to open a restaurant.

The joy, however, turned into disappointment. The flyers announcing the chain's arrival were a hoax ? the result, police say, of a feud between two residents.

But all was not lost.

Taco Bell executives learned of the mix-up and arranged an enormous feast for Sunday. They plan to fly enough ingredients in from Anchorage to make 10,000 tacos.

"It'll be a big event for our community," Mayor Joe Klejka said.

Taco Bell will offer its fare for free. There will be 950 pounds of seasoned beef, 300 pounds of lettuce, 150 pounds of cheddar cheese, 500 pounds of reduced fat sour cream and 300 pounds of tomatoes.

The chain is accustomed to feeding large groups of people in far-flung places.

"If we can feed people in Afghanistan and Iraq, we can feed people in Bethel," company CEO Greg Creed said, declining to discuss the cost of the feast.

The community-wide event comes at the right time.

Since it is the start of the Fourth of July holiday, the population is expected to rise, up to 10,000, as people from outlying villages arrive for the week.

Police Sgt. Chris Salyers said the hoax appeared to be the result of one resident retaliating against another.

Flyers went up in June, announcing the opening and including a phone number to call to inquire about a job at the new restaurant. The number belonged to the targeted person.

Bethel has a large transient population, with people moving from the Lower 48 to work in the hub city. The city has no bars, and will soon have its first movie theater, said Angela Denning-Barnes, news director at radio station KYUK.

There are a dozen or so restaurants, most with similar menus. A couple of restaurants offer some Mexican food, but the price is prohibitive ? $15 for a burrito and rice.

The Subway is quite popular, but getting a taco means flying to Anchorage.

"It's kind of an expensive taco," said Sam Blankenship, who works for the city.

Blige talks turkey over chicken ad controversy

Chinafotopress / Getty Images Contributor

By Rolling Stone

Mary J. Blige is speaking out for the first time about the stir surrounding her controversial Burger King commercial that leaked in April.

Appearing on Hot 97's Angie Martinez show on Thursday, the R&B star talked about the fallout from the ad and asked for forgiveness from her fans. "I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that purposefully. I thought I was doing something right. So forgive me."

Burger King pulls controversial Mary J. Blige ad

In the Burger King commerical, which leaked back in April, Blige sang about a fried chicken wrap to the tune of her song "Don't Mind." The ad was widely criticized for playing into African-American stereotypes, and the fast-food chain quickly pulled the commercial, citing music licensing issues. Soon after, the company issued a public mea culpa to Blige: "We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final. We know how important Mary J. is to her fans, and we are currently in the process of finalizing the commercial. We hope to have the final ad on the air soon."

On Thursday, Blige recalled seeing the leaked version of the ad for the first time. "Oh my God, my heart dropped down to my stomach," Blige told Martinez. "I got this sweat and I said, real calm, 'This too shall pass.' But it just kept getting worse and worse and worse ... I went online to listen to the remix I did with Fat Joe, and all I can see is 'Burger King' and 'chicken' and 'buffoonery.' It just broke my heart.

Burger King apologizes to Mary J. Blige for controversial ad

"I would never just bust out singing about chicken and chicken wings," added Blige. "It hurt my feelings and crushed me for two days."

Explaining why she's remained silent about the ad until now, Blige said, "There was too much going on for me to stick my head out there and say anything. So I just pulled back and watched everyone and everything."

100 greatest singers of all time: Mary J. Blige

Blige added that she was originally sold on the idea that she would "be shot in an iconic way" for the ad and that she'd seen it as "a great branding opportunity." She also said that while she understood the jokes about the spot looking back, the experience also showed her who her real friends were. "Busta Rhymes hit me and he was like, "Are you ok, sis? I see what you were trying to do,'" recalled Blige. "Fat Joe hit me; he was like, 'Yo, we don't care about that stupid chicken commercial or whatever. We love you, Mary, and we know what you were trying to do."'

Still, Blige said, "It was a mistake when you look at it at the end of the day, because people look at it as a mistake. But I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn't come out like that."

The Ugly Truth About Exercise Equipment ? News and Reviews

You have probably all seen the various fitness equipment commercials. The claims made in these commercials tend to stretch credibility to the limit. You are invited to ?Get the perfect abs in 10 minutes a day? or even ? Have a sculpted body in no time.? Each machine claims to use cutting edge technology with the express purpose to get you in shape and lose pounds with a minimal effort. Oh boy! If it was only that simple. We all desire to look great and feel healthy but you have to put some work in. This usually takes the form of a vigorous exercise schedule combined with a properly balanced diet. In order to lose weight and achieve a well toned body you will have to burn calories on a regularly basis. You don?t have to be a genius to figure that out. There is a plethora of fitness equipment on the market and most are just fads which are fashionable for a few months then disappear never to see the light of day again. There is, however, one that is still a major player, and that is the treadmill.

Torso Track, Total Gym 1000/2000, Ab Sculptor, Ab Rockers, Ab Doers, Slam Man, Thighmasters, Toning System, Door Gym, Orbitrek are the latest thing one day and then forgotten the next. You may ask yourself why you never see treadmills sold on infomercials? The reason is simple. It is because it is not a high profit, hyped up, exercise gadget, which is more the product of clever marketing than a serious piece of exercise equipment. Most infomercial equipment is designed for just one purpose, to make as much money as soon as possible before people discover that they don?t work. Most of the price of this equipment is used in order to market it. So who would possibly want to buy this stuff? Usually it is people who mistakenly believe that there are shortcuts to weight loss and getting in shape. Achieving your fitness goals requires that you put in some work and the results will not happen over night.

No machine is going to produce the results you desire without commitment from yourself. Have you ever seen any infomercial equipment at a health club? No, because they don?t work and they?re not built to last. What you will see, however, are a number of treadmills, often with people waiting their turn to use them. It really boils down to this. Getting fit is really the prodcut of two things ? time and effort. The more time and effort you put into exercising the more calories you are going to burn and the more weight you will lose. If you are looking for fitness equipment that will maximize your efforts, then a Treadmill is the obvious choice.

Is rodent control los angeles something ... - IdeaMarketers.com

Is rodent control los angeles something you have been thinking about? If so, this means that you have a problem at your home or place of employment. While this may be something that you are scared of, don't worry - there is help out there. Of course, you need to find a company that can help you control this problem. Better yet, you want to find somebody who can help you get rid of the rodents once and for all. This will make you feel much better about yourself as well as your property as a whole.

There are many steps to take if you are interested in rodent control:

1. Find out what type of problem you are having. This is the first step in finding a solution. Of course, you may not know what type of rodent you are dealing with unless you have seen it with your own eyes. If nothing else, gather as much information as possible - you are going to need this in the near future. 2. Contact a rodent control company that is well known for offering services in your part of Los Angeles. When you do this, you know that you are now in good hands. It is during this time that you should share any knowledge you have with the company you decide to hire. This will go a long way in helping the worker pinpoint the issue and put a plan of attack into place. 3. Make sure the problem is solved sooner rather than later. It is one thing to call in a rodent control company. It is another thing entirely to make sure you are no longer facing any issues. Keep an eye on your property in the future to ensure that the problem does not come back. How to Find a Provider

With so many rodent control companies out there, you need to find the one that is going to be best for your property. This means a provider that offers a high level of effective service at a price you can afford.

Here are three questions to ask as you attempt to settle on the right company:

1. Do I have any experience hiring a rodent control company? 2. How much money am I willing to pay to get this problem under control once and for all? 3. Do I know of any companies in the area that have a good reputation for being able to handle this type of problem?

When you answer these three questions, you will find yourself in position to make an informed decision in the near future.

There is nothing worse than a rodent problem. That being said, you have to focus on finding a solution as soon as possible. When you hire a rodent control company in Los Angeles, you at least know that you are getting the level of service you deserve.

These steps can help you control any rodent problem you may be dealing with. The sooner you call a professional the sooner you can rid your property of pests.

Pollutants could pose health risks for 5 sea turtle species

Pollutants could pose health risks for 5 sea turtle species [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Jun-2012
[ | E-mail | Share Share ]

Contact: Michael E. Newman

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Researchers at the Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML) and four partner organizations have measured for the first time concentrations of 13 perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in five different endangered species of sea turtles. While PFC toxicology studies have not yet been conducted on turtles, the levels of the compounds seen in all five species approach the amounts known to cause adverse health effects in other animals.

PFCs are man-made compounds that have many uses including stain-resistant coatings, fire-fighting foams and emulsifiers in plastics manufacturing. They have become widespread pollutants, are detectable in human and wildlife samples worldwide, infiltrate food chains, and have been shown in laboratory animalsrats, mice and fishto be toxic to the liver, the thyroid, neurobehavioral function and the immune system. The PFCs most commonly found in the environment are perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

Located in Charleston, S.C., the HML is a collaboration of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina.

"In our experiment, we wanted to accomplish two goals," says NIST research biologist and study lead Jennifer Keller. "We wanted to get the first accurate measurements of the plasma blood concentrations of PFCs in five sea turtle species across different trophic [food chain] levels, and then compare those concentrations to ones known to cause toxic effects in laboratory animals. That way, we could estimate the potential health risks from PFC exposure for all five turtles."

The five sea turtle species studied were the green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead and Kemp's ridley. Their preferred diets range up the food chain from the green's sea grasses and algae to the crabs favored by the Kemp's ridley. The researchers expected that the PFC concentrations would be higher in species that fed farther up the food chain, since their prey's tissues would probably concentrate the pollutants.

This was generally the case. Plant-eating green turtles had the lowest plasma concentrations for the majority of PFCs examined, especially PFOS. As expected, leatherbacks, loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys had progressively higher PFOS concentrations. Surprisingly, however, hawksbillswho browse low on the food chain, primarily on spongesrecorded the second-highest average concentration of PFOS and were the only species to have a detectable PFOA level. The researchers surmise that this may relate to the locations where the hawksbills forage, or it may suggest that sponges have unusually high concentrations of PFOS and PFOA.

In the second part of the study, Keller and her colleagues compared the plasma concentrations of PFOS that they found in the five sea turtle species with previously reported concentrations that were shown to have adverse health effects in laboratory animals. The results showed that hawksbills, loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys had PFOS concentrations approaching those linked to liver and neurobehavioral toxicity in other animals; levels in loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys approached those linked to thyroid disruption in other animals; and all five species had levels that approached those linked to suppressed immunity in other animals.

"Better understanding the threat of PFCs, especially PFOS, to sea turtles can help wildlife managers and others develop strategies to deal with potential health problems," Keller says. "Our study provides the first baseline data in this area but more research is neededespecially for hawksbills after seeing their unexpectedly high PFC exposure."

Researchers from the College of Charleston's Grice Marine Laboratory, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center also contributed to the study.

Pollutants could pose health risks for 5 sea turtle species [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Jun-2012

The results showed that hawksbills, loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys had PFOS concentrations approaching those linked to liver and neurobehavioral toxicity in other animals; levels in loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys approached those linked to thyroid disruption in other animals; and all five species had levels that approached those linked to suppressed immunity in other animals.

food: sablefish with zucchini salad ? food, drinks & travel.

well, it?s summer.? so it?s really that time of year when i think, gee, i should try and exercise and eat healthy and maybe put in a little effort to looking good in my bathing suit.
and then i remember thats a lot of work.? and just sip my coffee while contemplating all the things i should be doing.

but, the nice weather does put me in the mood for some fresh healthy-type meals.

yesterday i requested a fish.? but beyond that, i was not particular.
my husband came back with an amazing recipe from the newest Taste Magazine (thanks liquor store) for Grilled Lemon Oregano Halibut over Zucchini Salad.? which obviously sounded crazy yum.
buuuuut? we?re really trying to focus on sustainable seafood and also i have a crapload of basil growing right now? so it became Grilled Lemon Basil Sablefish over Zucchini Salad.
which was in no way a sacrifice or compromise.

it is essentially a marinated zucchini salad tossed with lettuce before serving and then the marinade/vinaigrette is also used over the fish.? and then we also bbq?d some local baby tomatoes and some green onions.

so here?s our version of the recipe ? also pared down for 2 people.

Grilled Lemon Basil Sablefish over Zucchini Salad

  • 2 Sablefish fillets ? aprox 6oz each
  • 1 medium green or yellow zucchini
  • 1.5tbsp chopped pitted green olives
  • 1.5tbsp chopped fresh dill
  • 1 cup washed salad greens (we used romaine & lambs lettuce ? recipe calls for arugula)
  • 2 tbsp roasted pine nuts

Vinaigrette

  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/4tsp salt
  • 1/6 cup olive oil
  • 2 tsp fresh chopped basil
  • fresh ground pepper to taste
  1. using a mandoline or knife, trim zucchini and cut into paper thin rounds.? In a large bowl, toss zucchini with tbsp of vinaigrette.? set aside to marinade for 20 minutes to 1 hour.
  2. Pre-heat grill or grill pan to medium high.? Brush fish fillets with vinaigrette and grill until just cooked through.? Meanwhile stir olives into remaining vinaigrette.
  3. when ready to plate, toss dill, pine nuts and greens into zucchini mixture.? Divide among plates and top with fish fillets.? spoon remaining vinaigrette over fish & salad.? Serve immediately.

sablefish is probably my favourite thing that comes out of the ocean right now.
it?s rich and buttery and so fucking delicious.
if i see it on a menu, its what i?m ordering. as long as it?s local and line caught, naturally.
because sablefish is so buttery (seriously ? its the best possible word to describe it) and high in fats, it can withstand the bbq/high heat really well.? which is good, because its a bottom feeder and should be cooked through.

but, further to this recipe? honestly, neither my husband or i like olives and we?re really working on it? and these green olives that he found were actually really good.? also, chopped up in the dressing made a big difference.
i?m on a 3 year plan to train myself to like olives.? i?m slowly getting there.

another win about this dish was that it was a zucchini meal that my husband actually enjoyed.
i love zucchini all the time, prepared any way? but he?s not a fan.? but, he?d never had it raw.
and this marinaded salad was almost like a quick pickle.? so he was sold.
which is good, because i have 3 zucchini plants growing on my patio this summer, so inevitably at some point we?re going to have a lot of zucchinis around.

this new issue of taste magazine has a whole mess of amazing looking meals.? you?ll be seeing a few more of them show up here.? i promise.

"Dragon Ball: The Search Is On!"

Character sheet:

Name- (If your a cannon character you know this.)
Age- (If you are Trunks or Goten and you don't mind romance between you and the girls with the current age diff thats fine. But if it bothers you that the guys are so much older then them go ahead and make them in their late teens like the girls. I personally don't care.)
Gender- (If you want to be Namekian I will not restrict the gender. Never liked the whole asexual thing)

Description- (It doesn't have to be extensive, especially if you're a cannon character but try to be descriptive, a paragraph will do just fine. Please try to find an anime pic.)

Personality- (Once again it doesn't have to be extensive and if you are a cannon you can differ somewhat from the character. But don't go overboard and totally change the character. Their personality's is why we love them. A paragraph or two is fine.)

Equipment/Weapons- (You don't have to go into too much detail and be realistic your not gonna have a gun that saps peoples powers away thats just not nice XP. But swords and stuff are cool.)

Powers/Attacks- (This is important for our fighters, but be realistic we all cant go super saiyan level four. Or have something like to that. But don't think you have to be weak either.)

History- (If your cannon you know where you can find this wiki is your friends, just keep in mind like I said before if you want to make Trunks and Goten younger that's cool. This is supposed to be for fun not for trying to get approval from Akira Toriyama or something. One to three paragraphs but don't go over board.)

Other- (This is for anything else you can think of Theme songs whatever you like.)

If you read the rules all the way through you know what to put here

Toshiba Excite 13 review a bigscreened tablet with a price to match

Well, this lede pretty much wrote itself. A 13-inch tablet, seriously? Toshiba is pushing the form factor limits with the Excite 13, and while its dimensions make it stand out in a sea of 7- and 10-inch devices, that isn't necessarily what tablet buyers are looking for.

There's no shortage of skepticism about such a large slate -- "slab" seems appropriate here -- so the Toshiba Excite 13 needs to provide an exceptional experience, with a brilliant display and smooth graphics, to make 2.2 pounds seem more palatable. On paper, its specs are promising: there's a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU under the hood, a 1600 x 900 display at 138 ppi and a clean build of Android 4.0. The company already has the Excite 7.7 and Excite 10 in its arsenal, and their good performance and bright displays make for compelling tablets. But how does a 13-inch tablet that starts at $650 round out that trio? Read on for our full impressions.

E-Records Linked to Fewer Malpractice Claims - Health News ...

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, June 25 (HealthDay News) ? Malpractice claims dipped dramatically among Massachusetts physicians after they began using electronic medical records, according to new research, although it?s not clear whether the record-keeping was connected to the decline in claims.

Despite its limitations, however, the research provides more evidence that electronic health records ?improve quality and safety and, as a result, prevent adverse events and reduce the risk of malpractice claims,? said study co-author Dr. Steven Simon, an associate professor with Harvard Medical School and an internist with VA Boston Healthcare System.

Electronic medical records allow physicians to use computers to track patients instead of relying on paper files. Supporters of electronic records say they cut down on errors by making it easier for doctors to spot problems such as medication conflicts and allergies. They can also make it easier for doctors to communicate with patients and with other physicians.

The medical world hasn?t quickly embraced electronic records, in part because of the cost of switching from paper. Email communications, in particular, appear rare: In 2010, a HealthDay/Harris Interactive poll found that fewer than 1 in 10 adults used email to communicate with their physician.

And some physicians are skeptical of electronic health records, saying they could lead to ?unintended consequences? that create new kinds of errors and problems for patients, Simon said.

In the new study, researchers tracked malpractice cases for 275 physicians who were surveyed in 2005 and 2007. Of those, 33 were targeted by malpractice claims. Forty-nine claims related to alleged medical malpractice that took place before the physicians adopted electronic health records, and two occurred after.

The researchers estimate that medical malpractice claims were about 84 percent less likely after electronic medical records were put into place.

The study says factors other than electronic health records could account for the difference in claims. Physicians who used the records, for example, could be ?early adopters? whose style of medicine was less likely to spawn malpractice claims. Also, Massachusetts made major changes to the state?s health care system in 2006.

And, the researchers pointed out in their letter published in the June 25 online edition of Archives of Internal Medicine, the study was limited to only those doctors in Massachusetts who were affiliated with Harvard Medical School.

Nevertheless, Tom Baker, a professor of law and health sciences at University of Pennsylvania Law School, said the study makes sense and ?alleviates concerns that the use of electronic health records could lead to increased medical malpractice risk.?

Some observers have feared that the ease of reviewing electronic health records would make it easier to find errors, he added.

?This research suggests that, rather than increasing
medical malpractice risk, adopting electronic health records reduces that risk,? he said.
