World stocks unsteady ahead of Bernanke speech

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets were unsteady Friday as investors waited to see whether Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke would promise new steps to help the U.S. economy ward off another recession.

Oil prices lingered below $85 a barrel while the dollar was down against the yen and the euro.

European shares were lower in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 dropped 0.9 percent to 5,086.29. Germany's DAX shed 2.1 percent to 5,466.94 and France's CAC-40 slipped 0.9 percent to 3,089.88.

Japan's Nikkei 225 swung between gains and losses throughout the day before closing with a 0.3 percent gain at 8,797.78. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.8 percent after a volatile morning to 1,778.95.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng gave up early gains and fell 0.9 percent to 19,582.88. Benchmarks in Australia, Singapore and the Philippines were also lower while stocks in mainland China were mixed.

Trading was jittery as investors waited to see if Bernanke offers more support for the U.S. economy when he delivers a highly anticipated speech at a conference later Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The Fed has already pledged low interest rates through to 2013. Some central bank watchers say the Fed has reached the limits of what a central bank can do to aid an economy that is beleaguered by problems that monetary policy can't fix ? high unemployment and massive government debt.

"The market is very volatile on low trading volume. Any news can be a big thing," said Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong.

Worries that the U.S. could be headed for another recession have in recent weeks caused huge volatility in equities, bonds and foreign exchange. The U.S. Commerce Department, meanwhile, is expected to lower its estimate of April-June economic growth in revised figures due for release Friday.

Some shares weakened on the heels of disappointing earnings reports. Air China Ltd. slid 4.3 percent after the company on Friday announced its first-half profit fell 12 percent as soaring fuel costs offset strong revenue growth.

PetroChina Ltd., China's biggest oil and gas company, dropped 3.6 percent, a day after the company said its first-half profit was nearly flat as losses in its refining business eroded gains from higher oil and gas output.

But bank stocks got a boost after billionaire investor Warren Buffett said he would invest $5 billion in troubled Bank of America, the largest U.S. bank.

Hong Kong-listed Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the world's biggest bank by market value, rose 1.4 percent. Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group gained 0.6 percent.

Mainland Chinese shares were mixed with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edging 0.1 percent lower to 2,612.19, after dipping almost 1 percent earlier in the day. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index gained 0.3 percent to 1,169.95.

Shares in plastic, pesticides and fertilizer companies led the advance while shares in cement, coal, oil and food-related companies weakened.

"The market is behaving pretty well today despite the weakness in the U.S. and Europe. It could still rise in the short term, but I am worried there may be no strong momentum of support," said Yang Yiniang, an analyst at Capital-edge Investment & Management Co. in Shanghai.

On Thursday, the U.S. government reported an increase in the number of people applying for unemployment benefits last week. The Labor Department said applications rose to 417,000, the highest in five weeks.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down or 1.5 percent at 11,149.82. The S&P 500 fell 1.6 percent to 1,159.27. The Nasdaq fell 1.9 percent to 2,419.63.

In currency trade, the euro rose to $1.4436 from $1.4368 late in New York on Thursday. The dollar slipped to 76.98 yen from 77.55 yen.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 31 cents to $84.99 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose 14 cents to finish at $85.30 on Thursday. In London, Brent crude for October delivery was down 19 cents to $110.43 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Report: NASA made proper pick for retired shuttles (AP)

WASHINGTON ? NASA acted properly when it picked new homes for the retired space shuttles, the space agency's watchdog said Thursday.

The shuttles were awarded in April to museums in suburban Washington, Los Angeles, Cape Canaveral, Fla., and New York, based on recommendations by a special NASA team and a decision by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, a former shuttle commander.

Congressional and local officials for two of the losing cities ? Houston and Dayton ? had asked for an investigation, alleging political influences in the bidding process.

"We found no evidence that the team's recommendation or the administrator's decision were tainted by political influence of any other improper consideration," Inspector General Paul Martin wrote in the report released Thursday. "Moreover, we found no attempt by White House officials to direct or influence Bolden's decision making."

The decision was based on attendance, population, funding and the facility. NASA said 13 of the bidders met their requirements and rated those on several categories, giving them a numerical score.

There was a scoring error for the Air Force Museum in Dayton and it should have tied with Cape Canaveral and New York, the inspector general found. But NASA chief Bolden told investigators he still would have picked the same cities because they had bigger populations and more international visitors. Also Dayton museum officials told him they might not be able to raise enough money.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, one of the officials who'd asked for the investigation, said in a statement Thursday that while NASA may have followed the rules in selecting the sites, it showed "incredibly bad judgment." The selection criteria gave more weight to international visitors than to geographic diversity of shuttle locations, he said.

"It is outrageous that easy access for foreign visitors was deemed more important than access for visitors from America's heartland," Brown said.

Space Center Houston, next door to Johnson Space Center, ranked near the bottom of the list. It scored low for attendance, international visitors, museum accreditation and difficulty transporting a shuttle there. Museums in Chicago, Seattle, Riverside, Calif., San Diego and McMinnville, Ore., all scored higher than Houston.

Bolden, who lived in Houston for many years as an astronaut and Marine and still has a home there, told investigators that personally, "I would have loved to have placed an Orbiter in Houston," but that it had lower attendance and fewer international visitors than the winners.

After the report was released, Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, criticized the selection process.

"It's clear to me this was rigged from the beginning and it was pretty clear Houston would not receive the orbiter," he said.

The 30-year space shuttle program ended with the last flight in July.

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum had already been promised one shuttle for its hangar in Dulles, Va. It will get Discovery, and give up the Enterprise, a test vehicle that never flew in orbit. That will be shipped to the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum in New York City. Atlantis will stay in Cape Canaveral and go to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Tennessee's Summitt has early onset dementia (AP)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ? Tennessee's Pat Summitt plans to coach "as long as the good Lord is willing" despite recently being diagnosed with early onset dementia.

In a statement from Summitt released by the university on Tuesday, the Hall of Fame coach said she visited with doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., after the end of the 2010-11 basketball season ended and was diagnosed with early onset dementia ? Alzheimer's type ? over the summer.

"I plan to continue to be your coach," Summitt said. "Obviously, I realize I may have some limitations with this condition since there will be some good days and some bad days."

The Knoxville News Sentinel and Washington Post first reported Summitt's condition. The coach did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Tennessee athletics director Joan Cronan told the AP that Summitt first thought her symptoms were side effects from medicine she was taking to treat rheumatoid arthritis. She said Summitt appears to be feeling better after beginning to get treatment for the dementia condition and speaking publically about it.

"She's ready to fight this and move on," Cronan said. "She had to come to grips with how she wanted to face it."

Summitt, 59, told the Knoxville paper she plans to rely on medication and mental exercises to manage the progressive condition that destroys cognitive abilities over time.

She said longtime assistants Holly Warlick, Dean Lockwood and Mickie DeMoss will take on more responsibilities with the team going forward.

Summitt met with the Lady Volunteers on Tuesday to discuss her diagnosis with them. Junior guard Taber Spani said the meeting was business-like, with Summitt telling the Lady Vols nothing would get in the way for their quest of a ninth national title this season.

"More than anything she just emphasized that she's our coach and that she wanted us to have complete confidence in her, and we do," Spani told the AP.

Both UT-Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek and Cronan pledged their support of Summitt's decision to continue coaching.

"Pat Summitt is our head coach and she will continue to be," Cronan said. "She is an icon not only for women's basketball but for all of women's athletics. For Pat to stand-up and share her health news is just a continuing example of her courage. Life is an unknown and none of us have a crystal ball. But I do have a record of knowing what Pat Summitt stands for; excellence, strength, honesty and courage."

As college basketball's winningest coach, Summitt has spent 37 seasons at Tennessee and has 1,071 career victories and eight national championships. The Lady Vols have failed to reach the Final Four since they last won the national championship in 2008.

Summitt said she met with local doctors after becoming concerned about her health, and those physicians recommended she undergo a more extensive evaluation. Summitt told the News Sentinel that her maternal grandmother had suffered from severe dementia.

"Pat came to us with concerns about her health and our preliminary evaluation was suggestive of dementia. Because of her young age, Pat was referred to neurology for formal evaluation," Dr. Amy Bentley, with Knoxville's Internal Medicine Associates, said in a statement. "After extensive testing, a diagnosis of early Alzheimer's was made and appropriate treatment was initiated."

Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma said in a statement he was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Summitt's diagnosis.

"You don't necessarily associate dementia with people our age so this announcement really put things in perspective," Auriemma said. "Pat has great support from her family, friends and staff and I know they will help her immensely. There is no doubt in my mind that Pat will take on this challenge as she has all others during her Hall of Fame career ? head on. I wish her all the best."

The tracks pulled from the sandstone blocks were prints from theropods ? bipedal, mostly carnivorous dinosaurs related to modern birds. The tracks indicated that the theropods were of three different sizes, ranging from the size of a chicken to around the size of a crane.

Because of their size and bones found in other sites in Victoria, the researchers are fairly confident they belong to a group of theropods called ornithomimosaurs, also known as "ostrich mimics" because their anatomy is similar to that of modern large flightless birds.

The printed slabs of sandstone were found along the rocky and remote Milanesia Beach in Otways National Park, west of Melbourne. The rough surf pounds the coastal cliffs, frequently fracturing slabs off the cliff face. When the tracks were made, Australia was connected to Antarctia and was located much closer to the South Pole, as a part of the paleogeographic continent of Gondwana. [Photos of the dinosaur tracks]

Finding footprints

Martin set off on the trail toward the footprints among the ragged slabs scattering the shore after he noticed ripple marks and trace fossils of insect burrows. "The ripples and burrows indicate a floodplain, which is the most likely area to find polar dinosaur tracks," he explained.

Researchers cannot determine the species of the theropods from the tracks. It's possible they were all of the same species (possibly even a theropod family), or they could have been different species traveling in the same area at roughly the same time.

When the tracks were laid down between 115 million to 105 million years ago, Earth was experiencing global warming, with the average temperature of the area at 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) ? about 10 F (6 C) higher than current temperatures there.

This would have dramatically affected the planet's biology and ecology. "These tracks provide us with a direct indicator of how these dinosaurs were interacting with the polar ecosystems during an important time in geological history," Martin said in a statement.

The report of the footprints was published online Aug. 9 in the journal Alcheringa.

The families of two former Goodyear workers who died of asbestos-related lung cancer have been awarded $22 million by a New York jury.

According to the lawsuits filed against The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Goodyear Canada, both Eugene McCarthy and Walter Koczur died of lung cancer in 1998. Both of them worked for the company in the 1960s and 1970s. Koczur was a steamfitter and McCarthy was an equipment engineer. According to the lawsuits, both of them were exposed to Goodyear?s asbestos-containing gaskets, as a result of which they developed lung cancer.

On June 21, a New York State Supreme Court jury decided that the men developed lung cancer due to their exposure to asbestos-laden sheet gasket material manufactured by Goodyear during the 1960s and 1970s. The decision came after a 5-week trial.

Koczur?s family was awarded $13.5 million for his pain, suffering and loss of consortium. The jury found the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company to be 27% responsible for Koczur?s lung cancer and Goodyear Canada to be 18% responsible.

The jury decided The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company to be 7% responsible and Goodyear Canada to be 5% responsible for McCarthy?s lung cancer. McCarthy?s family was awarded $8.5 million.

Debt deal could spur relief rally (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A deal involving up to $3 trillion in deficit cuts over a decade that would let U.S. lawmakers raise the U.S. borrowing limit and avoid default could spur a relief rally in Wall Street stocks and a rise in U.S. government yields on Monday.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said on Sunday he hopes to hold a Senate vote tonight on an emerging deal to raise the U.S. $14.3 trillion U.S. debt ceiling.

The possibility of an agreement raised hopes that a bitter, weeks-long partisan battle over cutting the U.S. deficit might be near a close.

"At this point, the markets are perceiving that a deal and a vote will be announced," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey.

The consequence of a debt deal will be "a relief rally in stocks," Krosby said. "There will also be an attempt to deconstruct the information: where the austerity will come from. You will see analysts try to dissect which sectors and companies will be impacted by the cuts."

Anxiety over the debt crisis and the U.S. economic outlook sent the S&P 500 lower last week, resulting in the worst week and month for the benchmark index since last August.

The CBOE Volatility index, Wall Street's "fear index," rose more than 40 percent, its biggest jump since May.

U.S. Treasury prices rallied last week as investors clung to relatively safe U.S. government debt and concluded that a weak economy meant the Federal Reserve would keep monetary policy accommodative for the foreseeable future.

A stock market rally prompted by a debt ceiling deal could be limited, however, by the U.S. economy's uncertain outlook, prospects that could be hurt by a debt ceiling plan based on fiscal austerity.

"Once the euphoria of having a deal is over, we will get back to the economy and that picture is not a pretty one," said Kevin Giddis, president of fixed income capital markets in Morgan Keegan in Memphis, Tennessee.

Government data released on Friday showed the U.S. economy stumbled badly in the first half of 2011 and came close to contracting in the January-March period.

"The market will quickly shift its focus to the employment data coming out on Friday," Krosby said. "A relief rally could fade if the data underscore that the economy is shifting into a stall, rather than sitting in a soft patch.

"The market (will) quickly focus on the data and on corporate earnings and corporate guidance," Krosby said.

Any relief enjoyed by the stock market would probably come at the expense of the U.S. Treasury market which benefited from its safe-haven status during the debt ceiling conflict. That would lead to higher U.S. yields.

Still, any rise in U.S. Treasury yields resulting from diminished anxiety about the debt ceiling would be limited by the troubled outlook for the U.S. economy, circumstances that appear to ensure that the Federal Reserve's monetary policy will remain accommodative for a long time.

The recent retreat in stocks has put them in a precarious position from a technical perspective as the S&P 500 index moves closer to its 200-day moving average, a level which could bring about additional selling if the index breaks below it.

The benchmark index successfully bounced off the level on Friday after the early morning decline.

"That is the line in the sand that really divides things going maybe bad -- to things really turning bad," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services in Charlotte, Vermont.

Even if a deal is struck, a possibility remains the United States could lose its triple-A credit rating if the terms are not draconinan enough to satisfy credit rating agencies.

"You will hear analysts debate whether or not the package is sufficient to keep the ratings agency at bay in terms of downgrading U.S. government debt," Krosby said.

Investors can still find some solace in corporate earnings. According to Thomson Reuters data through Friday, of the 327 S&P 500 companies that have posted earnings, 73 percent have reported results higher than analysts' expectations.

Companies due to report earnings this week include Kraft Foods Inc, Clorox Co, Pfizer Inc and Prudential Financial Inc.

But a weak economy combined with a debt ceiling bill that involves more fiscal restraint could hurt stocks later on.

"Companies have been able to offset a lack of demand by refinancing their balance sheets, but longer term, the sledding will be much tougher for equities and corporations," Giddis said. "We have to improve job growth for businesses to do well or for the equity market to do well."

In addition to weak economic data, corporate earnings, and U.S. debt ceiling developments, investors must remain prepared for any developments from the simmering debt crisis in the euro zone, which could further heighten investor angst.

"There are two things I keep my eye on -- one on Washington and one on Brussels, because between the two of them you never know which headline risk is going to hit you over the head next," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services in Charlotte, Vermont.
