Glow of recognition: New detectors could provide easy visual identification of toxins or pathogens

ScienceDaily (Dec. 14, 2011) ? Researchers at MIT have developed a new way of revealing the presence of specific chemicals -- whether toxins, disease markers, pathogens or explosives. The system visually signals the presence of a target chemical by emitting a fluorescent glow.

The approach combines fluorescent molecules with an open scaffolding called a metal-organic framework (MOF). This structure provides lots of open space for target molecules to occupy, bringing them into close proximity with fluorescent molecules that react to their presence.

The findings were reported in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in a paper by assistant professor of chemistry Mircea Dinc?, with postdoc Natalia Shustova and undergraduate student Brian McCarthy, published online in November and to appear in a forthcoming print issue.

The work could have significant applications in sensors attuned to specific compounds whose detection could be read at a glance simply by watching for the material to glow. "A lot of known sensors work in reverse," Dinc? says, meaning they "turn off" in the presence of the target compound. "Turn-on sensors are better," he says, because "they're easier to detect, the contrast is better."

Mark Allendorf, a research scientist at Sandia National Laboratory, who was not involved in this work, agrees. "Present materials generally function via luminescence quenching," and thus "suffer from reduced detection sensitivity and selectivity," he says. "Turn-on detection would address these limitations and be a considerable advance."

For example, if the material is tuned to detect carbon dioxide, "the more gas you have, the more intensity in the response," making the device's readout more obvious. And it's not just the presence or absence of a specific type of molecule: The system can also respond to changes in the viscosity of a fluid, such as blood, which can be an important indicator in diseases such as diabetes. In such applications, the material could provide two different indications at once -- for example, changing in color depending on the presence of a specific compound, such as glucose in the blood, while changing in intensity depending on the viscosity.

MOF materials were first produced about 15 years ago, but their amazing porosity has made them a very active area of research. Although they simply look like little rocks, the sponge-like structures have so much internal surface area that one gram of the material, if unfolded, would cover a football field, Dinc? says.

The material's inner pores are about one nanometer (one billionth of a meter) across, making them "about the size of a small molecule" and well suited as molecular detectors, he says.

The new material is based on the MIT team's discovery of a way to bind a certain type of fluorescent molecules, also known as chromophores, onto the MOF's metal atoms. While these particular chromophores cannot emit light by themselves, they become fluorescent when bunched together. When in bunches or clumps, however, target molecules cannot reach them and therefore cannot be detected. Attaching the chromophores to nodes of the MOF's open framework keeps them from clumping, while also keeping them close to the empty pores so they can easily respond to the arrival of a target molecule.

Ben Zhong Tang, a professor of chemistry at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who was not involved in this work, says the MIT researchers have taken "an elegant approach" to producing functional MOFs, and "have already demonstrated the utility of their MOFs for detection and differentiation of normally difficult-to-distinguish" molecules called volatile organic compounds.

Tang says the new system still needs further refinement to improve the efficiency of production, which he says should be easily accomplished. Once that is achieved, he says, it could find many uses. "Many more applications may be envisioned: For example, the MOFs may serve as smart vehicles and monitors for controlled drug deliveries," with the additional benefit that "the fluorescence should be gradually weakened in intensity along with progressive release of the drugs, thus enabling in situ real-time monitoring of the drug release profiles." But for now, he says, "the work is excellent in terms of proof of concept."

The work was supported by MIT's Center for Excitonics, an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, and by the National Science Foundation.

The Era Of Attachment Is Over: SugarSync Adds ?Share By Email?

As a fan of kitten videos, I'm often embarrassed by my inability to attach said videos to emails I'm trying to send the rest of my local chapter of American Society Of Kitten Video Lovers (ASKVL). While 50MB may seem small to some (and it's a file barely big enough to hold a kitten video let alone a video of a kitten and and a baby monkey), it's enormous for some mail systems. In the end, I have to use Dropbox or SugarSync to share the video with my intended recipient, adding an unwanted step in my kitten video sharing experience. It's enough to make me cry uncontrollably into my Lemon Zinger tea mug!

Antibody treatment protects monkeys from Hendra virus disease

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2011) ? A human antibody given to monkeys infected with the deadly Hendra virus completely protected them from disease, according to a study published by National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists and their collaborators. Hendra and the closely related Nipah virus, both rare viruses that are part of the NIH biodefense research program, target the lungs and brain and have human case fatality rates of 60 percent and more than 75 percent, respectively. These diseases in monkeys mirror what happens in humans, and the study results are cause for hope that the antibody, named m102.4, ultimately may be developed into a possible treatment for people who become infected with these viruses.

In May 2010, shortly after the NIH study in monkeys successfully concluded, Australian health officials requested m102.4 for emergency use in a woman and her 12-year-old daughter. They had been exposed to Hendra virus from an ill horse that ultimately was euthanized. Both the woman and child survived and showed no side effects from the treatment.

"This is an important research advance that illustrates how scientific discoveries emerge through a steady stepwise process, and how our investment in research on countermeasures for biodefense and emerging infectious diseases can help global preparedness efforts," said Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Hendra virus emerged in 1994 in Australia and primarily affects horses, which can spread the disease to humans. No person-to-person transmission of Hendra has been reported. Nipah virus emerged in 1998 in Malaysia, and also has been found in Bangladesh and India. Nipah appears to infect humans more easily than Hendra and can be transmitted from person to person.

The NIAID-supported study, which appears online in Science Translational Medicine, involved infecting 14 African green monkeys with a lethal dose of Hendra virus. Twelve of the monkeys then received two treatments with m102.4, one either at 10, 24, or 72 hours after being infected, and another 48 hours later. All 12 monkeys treated with the antibody survived. The two untreated control monkeys died eight days after being infected.

The findings are the result of a series of studies carried out by different research laboratories. A group from NIH's National Cancer Institute and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) discovered m102.4 in 2006 and developed the antibody for use in laboratory research. USUHS and Australian collaborators then developed an animal study model of m102.4 in ferrets infected with Nipah virus; the University of Texas Medical Branch and USUHS developed a monkey study model of Hendra and Nipah infection; and together with investigators from Boston University and NIAID's Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) designed and carried out the antibody trial in biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) laboratory space at RML. Because the Hendra and Nipah viruses are so deadly and there is no licensed vaccine or treatment for either of them, both viruses must be studied in maximum-containment BSL-4 laboratories.

The World Health Organization reports 475 human cases of Nipah through 2008, with 251 deaths. Through the same period, there have been seven human Hendra cases with four fatalities. There also have been many horse fatalities. In their study, the scientists cite a handful of other outbreaks of Hendra virus in horses since 2008. Since June 2011, there have been 18 outbreaks in Australia, primarily in Queensland and New South Wales, with the latest reported Oct. 10.

Both viruses are spread by fruit bats, commonly known as flying foxes, which are reservoirs for these viruses. The fruit bats, which are resistant to the diseases, are found primarily in Australia but have been found as far west as Africa, north to India and Pakistan, and east to the Philippines.

Additional studies on m102.4 as a possible treatment and as a preventive vaccine for Nipah and Hendra virus infections are being planned.

Syrians rally for Assad, Libya recognizes opposition (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Tens of thousands of Syrians rallied in support of President Bashar al-Assad in the northern city of Aleppo Wednesday while to the south his troops carried out a sustained offensive to crush the seven-month uprising against his rule.

The state-organized gathering in Syria's commercial hub came a week after a similar demonstration in the capital Damascus, showing authorities can still rally mass support in the country's two main cities despite waves of unrest across the nation.

"We love you" sang demonstrators, holding pictures of Assad and waving Syrian, Russian and Chinese flags -- a reference to Moscow and Beijing's veto of a United Nations draft resolution which could have led to U.N. sanctions against Damascus.

Huge flags were draped from seven-storey buildings around the square where demonstrators gathered to hear nationalist songs and speeches of support for Assad, who has defied U.S. and European calls to step down. Residents said Aleppo schools were closed Wednesday to boost attendance at the rally.

In the central city of Homs, where residents say gunmen and army deserters have battled government forces sweeping through several neighborhoods, activists said six people were shot dead by pro-Assad "shabbiha" gunmen in the Naziheen district.

Those deaths raised to at least 38 the death toll in a three-day army offensive in Homs, a city of one million which has seen regular anti-government protests.

Near the border with Lebanon, activists said two people were killed in the town of Nazariya. Foreign journalists are largely banned from Syria, making independent confirmation of reported events difficult.

Syrian authorities blame "armed terrorist groups" for the unrest and say 1,100 police and soldiers have been killed. The United Nations says Assad's crackdown has killed 3,000 people, including 187 children.

Syria's opposition National Council, which has pledged to seek international protection to stop civilian deaths and has called for the uprising to remain peaceful, was recognized by Libya Wednesday as the country's legitimate authority.

SUNNI DEFECTIONS

Assad has sent troops and tanks into cities and towns to put down the unrest. But protests have persisted, although in reduced numbers, with several thousand soldiers from the mainly Sunni Muslim rank-and-file army now challenging his rule.

Diplomats and military analysts say moves by Assad, of the minority Alawite sect, to crush the protest movement inspired by the Arab Spring that overthrew veteran leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, have fueled army desertions.

Several officers have recently announced their desertion, although most desertions have been Sunni conscripts who usually man roadblocks and form the outer layer of military and secret police rings around restless cities and towns.

The officer corps of Syria's army is composed mainly of members of the Alawite community.

The latest desertions included 20 soldiers who left their posts near the town of Hirak, 80 km (50 miles) south of Damascus, and clashed with troops after the killing of three protesters demonstrating against the arrest of a popular cleric, activists said.

One Hirak resident said the clashes, which broke out late on Tuesday, continued Wednesday and troops sealed off the city cemetery to prevent mourners burying the dead protesters.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four of Assad's troops were killed in the province of Idlib near the border with Turkey in northwest Syria.

"Attrition is increasing within army ranks and beginning to form a problem for Assad. The geographical area of the protests is large and the regime is being forced to use Sunni soldiers to back up core forces," a senior European diplomat in Damascus said.

"It is taking longer and longer for loyalist forces to control rebel areas. Large areas of Idlib are virtually out of control and it took them 10 days to regain a small town like Rastan," he said, referring to fighting in which opposition sources say 100 insurgents and deserters were killed and Assad's forces also suffered heavy losses.

Eagles hold off Redskins, snap 4-game skid

Philadelphia prevails 20-13; Coleman has 3 INTs as Grossman benched

Eagles tight end Brent Celek (87) celebrates his touchdown against the Redskins on Sunday.

updated 7:15 p.m. ET Oct. 16, 2011

LANDOVER, Md. - The 50-50 plays that seemed to go wrong during the Philadelphia Eagles' four-game skid went right for a change, and that's perhaps the main reason the so-called dream team of the NFC East isn't buried yet.

The Eagles finally learned how to tackle and stop the run Sunday during a 20-13 win over the Washington Redskins. Kurt Coleman celebrated his injury-induced return to the starting lineup with three interceptions. The offense overcame a thinned offensive line and gave the ball to LeSean McCoy a career-high 28 times.

But the story of the game was also told in these snapshot moments:

  • When the ball was lying on the goal line after a wayward snap, Michael Vick got to it first.
  • When McCoy lost the ball at the end of a run, he was already down.
  • When Brent Celek tipped the ball twice with defenders around him, he still made the catch - an incredible grab - while falling on his back.
  • When a pass by Vick fluttered dangerously after being tipped behind the line of scrimmage, it landed in Jeremy Maclin's hands instead of those of a defender.

"The last four games, I think we've been having a lot of things go the other team's way," center Jason Kelce said, "batted balls going into their hands and stuff like that. I think today we're starting to get a little bit of that luck shifting over back to our side."

The Eagles (2-4) raced to a 20-0 second-quarter lead and picked off Rex Grossman four times, prompting Washington coach Mike Shanahan to answer the fans' chants of "We want Beck!" by giving John Beck his first regular-season appearance since 2007.

Beck got the Redskins back into the game with a 2-yard quarterback draw to cap an 80-yard drive that pulled the Redskins within seven points with 2:44 remaining, but the Eagles ran out the clock with the tail end of a 126-yard day from McCoy, who headed to the sideline and punched coach Andy Reid in the chest in his excitement.

"He knocked the wind out of me. He got me, got a good one," Reid said. "But I don't really care. He can do anything he wants today."

Said McCoy of his stout coach: "Andy, we're like his kids. We're still young. I kind of punched him. ... A lot of cushion there."

The Redskins (3-2) were the division's surprise leaders, in front by themselves this late in the season for the first time since 1999, but now their momentum has ground to a halt - and they have a quarterback quandary to boot. Shanahan said he went with Beck because the team "needed a spark." The coach wouldn't say who will start next week's game at Carolina.

"I believe in myself, no matter if the whole stadium doesn't, the coaching staff doesn't," Grossman said. "Whatever the situation is, I believe in myself."

The Redskins also lost left guard Kory Lichtensteiger with a right knee injury that "doesn't look good," according to Shanahan. Left tackle Trent Williams has a severely sprained right ankle. Tight end Chris Cooley broke his left index finger and will need surgery.

The Eagles had already shuffled their offensive line. King Dunlap's back spasms and Jason Peters' hamstring injury left them with two healthy tackles: Winston Justice, who hadn't played a snap on offense this season, and Todd Herremans, the usual right tackle who started on the left side for the first time since he was a rookie in 2005.

Coleman got the call because safety Jarrad Page was out with a stinger. Coleman started the first three games before getting benched; now he's the first Eagles player with three interceptions in a game since Joe Scarpati in 1966.

"I wasn't getting it done, and that was apparent," Coleman said. "It was a humbling experience. God taught me a lesson, and I just worked my butt off the last couple weeks."

Vick completed 18 of 31 passes for 237 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for 54 yards on seven carries, including a 31-yard scamper on a third-and-10 after which he kicked a stray ball that nearly hit a Redskins cheerleader. He paused, holding his hand to his heart to display his remorse.

"It was very inappropriate to kick the ball. Sorry about that. I apologize to the cheerleaders," Vick said. "That was a very bad gesture, and I came out and let my emotions get the best of me."

Vick also left for two plays in the third quarter. He said he had dirt in his eyes after getting tackled at the end of a run. Vince Young filled in, making his Eagles debut, and threw an interception that gave the Redskins the ball at the 18.

Two plays later, Coleman picked off Grossman, giving Philadelphia the type of momentum swing it had been missing much of the year - as part of a win that helps take some of the heat off Reid.

"We love our coach to death, and we'll go to bat for him each and every week," Vick said. "We can be 1-13, and everything he tells us, we're going to go out and do."

Vick's interception was tipped by a lineman in the third quarter. The Eagles led the league with 15 giveaways entering the game, but Grossman's errant ways tilted the balance the other way.

"We know we have a long road to go," Coleman said. "But if we continue to play like we did today, then I think we're on way."

Notes: Philadelphia has won 10 of 12 at Washington, including a 59-28 laugher a year ago. ... McCoy is the first Eagles player score a TD in six consecutive games since Ricky Watters in 1995. McCoy is also the first in franchise history to do it in six straight at the start of a season. ... The Eagles, 30th in run defense entering the game, allowed just 42 yards rushing. ... Washington's inactives include CB Phillip Buchanon (neck) and WR Anthony Armstrong (hamstring).

Lawyer for Jackson doctor says key tactic dropped (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Dr. Conrad Murray's attorney says he knew months before the physician's trial that a theory that Michael Jackson drank a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol would have to be abandoned.

Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan made the statement Friday without the jury present.

Murray, who was not in court for the hearing, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the superstar from an overdose of propofol.

The idea of Jackson orally giving himself the fatal dose was long touted by defense attorneys as a centerpiece of their case. Documents had been filed and arguments heard about studies on the issue.

The attorneys have even referred to a fruit juice jar found on Jackson's bedside table, suggesting he had taken the drug with juice.

Flanagan initially dropped the bombshell Wednesday that the defense was abandoning the strategy.

"We are not going to assert at any point in this trial that Michael Jackson at any time orally ingested propofol," said Flanagan, who revealed he had commissioned a study that concluded propofol would not be absorbed into the body when ingested.

But he did not say when the study had been done.

Prosecutors and the judge appeared stunned at the announcement

At Friday's hearing, on a day when testimony was not heard, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren told the judge, "We are dealing with an ever-changing defense. It was just a couple of days ago they abandoned oral propofol."

"Oh, your honor, that is not correct," Flanagan said.

"No?' Walgren asked incredulously.

"We abandoned oral propofol months ago," said Flanagan, saying they were swayed by a report from the leading expert on the drug, who is expected to testify for the prosecution next week.

He said Dr. Steven Shafer had questioned "the bioavailability of oral propofol," meaning whether it would be absorbed into the body if swallowed.

Flanagan said the defense decided to have its own study conducted and, "We determined back in May that bioavailability of oral propofol was not feasible."

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said he had never been advised in advance that the theory would be dropped. He said he would not be dealing with Walgren's claims of an ever-changing defense.

"I don't have to go there," he said. "It is what it is right now."

Flanagan's disclosure offered a backstage look at possible defense gamesmanship in leading prosecutors to prepare to answer a defense theory that would never be presented.

A defense attorney not involved in the case said it is not an ethical or legal obligation of the defense to keep the prosecution posted on its strategies.

"I don't personally see a violation," said attorney Thomas Mesereau Jr. "You're supposed to operate in good faith, but you don't have to tell them every little strategy you intend to employ ... . Maybe this defense team was debating whether to use the issue up to the end."

In opening statements, defense attorney Edward Chernoff told the jury he would allege that Jackson self-administered drugs but did not specifically mention oral ingestion of propofol.

In other developments, the prosecution said its last witness will be Shafer and his testimony could take a day. The defense said it would call 15 witnesses including police officers, experts and some character witnesses. Attorney Nareg Gourjian estimated that would consume the rest of next week.

(AP) ? Dewey Bozella landed a hard right cross on his opponent's jaw at the final bell, and the 52-year-old boxer raised his arms in victory.

After 26 years behind bars for a murder he didn't commit, Bozella triumphantly realized a dream deferred in his first and only professional fight.

Bozella won his pro boxing debut Saturday night, beating Larry Hopkins by unanimous decision in the latest stunning chapter of a remarkable life.

"I used to lay in my cell and dream about this happening," Bozella said. "It was all worth it. It was my dream come true."

Wrongfully convicted of killing 92-year-old Emma Crapser in 1983, Bozella earned two college degrees and became the light heavyweight champion of Sing Sing before he was exonerated in 2009.

Golden Boy Promotions fulfilled Bozella's dream by putting him on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins' bout with Chad Dawson. His victory, punctuated by that devastating punch to Larry Hopkins' head at the final bell, brought the crowd to its feet.

"This was my first and last fight," said Bozella, who lives in Newburgh, N.Y. "It's a young man's game. I did what I wanted to do, and I'm happy. I appreciate everybody that made this possible. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life."

Despite a complete lack of physical evidence, Bozella was convicted of killing Crapser on her way home after a night out playing bingo. He maintained his innocence throughout a quarter-century behind bars, even turning down a plea-bargain offer in 1990 that would have required admitting guilt, until his conviction was overturned.

Bozella battered the winless Hopkins throughout the second half of their four-round fight. Hopkins, no relation to Bernard Hopkins, also lost points for losing his mouthpiece six times in the final round, apparently exhausted and unable to match Bozella's conditioning.

"This guy is an incredible athlete, a remarkable man," said Bernard Hopkins, the 46-year-old light heavyweight champion who trained with Bozella in recent weeks. "I spent five years in the penitentiary, but not for something I didn't do. We understand what it takes to overcome your circumstances. Unless you've done it, you can't understand it. I have all respect for what Dewey has done with his life."

Bozella didn't have a younger man's hand speed, but he moved with a confident ease and showed strong technique in the ring, constantly moving his head and outmaneuvering Larry Hopkins. Both cruiserweights absorbed big shots in the first two rounds, but Bozella was never hurt beyond a welt near his left eye.

Bozella dominated the fourth round, even finishing the final seconds in style. After Hopkins spit his mouthpiece into the air and flailed at it with his boxing gloves, Bozella decked him with a right cross at the bell, leaving Hopkins woozy on the ropes.

With his family and friends gathered around him in the ring, Bozella raised his gloves in victory when the judges favored him 39-36, 38-37 and 38-36.

Bozella has never lived without tragedy. His father beat his pregnant mother to death when he was 9 years old, and two of his brothers were murdered on the Brooklyn streets.

Four months after he moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1977, he was suspected of killing Crapser, but not indicted by a grand jury. Bozella cleaned up a life of petty crime and embraced boxing at a gym run by former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, but he was arrested and convicted of Crapser's murder in December 1983 on the strength of false testimony from other convicts.

Bozella's story attracted the attention of Oscar De La Hoya and his business associates, who arranged for Bozella to fight in Los Angeles after he passed the California State Athletic Commission's fitness requirements.

Although the crowd loved Bozella's fight, he said he had "done what I needed to do." He hopes to spend his life training fighters in Newburgh.

"I'm going to concentrate on the Dewey Bozella Foundation, which really means opening a gym in my town," Bozella said. "Because there are no gyms, and I'd like to see kids who are on the street have something productive to do. No more fighting for me."

Poetry Urban Legends Revealed #3

This is the third in a series of examinations of urban legends related to poetry and poets and whether they are true or false. Today we learn if Thomas Bowdler actually ?bowdlerised? a reference to a bull in Longfellow?s ?Wreck of the Hesperus? to ?gentleman cow,? we marvel at the brashness of Robert Lowell and discover exactly what really happened to Dorothy Parker?s ashes!

Today is a ?Grab Bag? day here at Entertainment Urban Legends Revealed, where each time we feature a different area of the world of arts and entertainment (outside of TV, Film, Music and Comics). Each time you will see grab bag legends from one of these following 23 ?Grab Bag? categories

Let?s begin!

POETRY LEGEND: Dorothy Parker?s ashes sat in a filing cabinet for nearly two decades.

STATUS: True

Dorothy Parker was one of the leading humorists and wits of the 20th Century.

dorothyparker

After selling her first poem to Vanity Fair in 1914, Parker eventually went to work for that magazine as well as Vogue as she became famous for her presence as a founding member of the gathering of New York wits known as the Algonquin Round Table.

In 1925, Harold Ross founded the New Yorker and Parker was one of his star writers. She wrote more than 300 poems for the magazine, specially in viciously dark poems, with suicide being a common topic. In 1926, Parker released the first volume of her poems titled Enough Rope. It sold well.

Eventually, Parker moved to Hollywood where she became a successful and acclaimed screenwriter. Her left-wing politics though resulted in her eventually becoming blacklisted.

She returned to New York City where she worked for various magazines, perhaps most famously doing book reviews for Esquire. She had two separate ?stints? being married to fellow writer Alan Campbell that ended with Campbell?s suicide in 1963 (from a drug overdose). However, her later years were mostly noted by her problems with alcoholism and after Campbell?s death, Parker did not have very many close friends.

This, therefore, led to the sad, strange fate of Parker?s ashes. She died in 1967 of a heart attack at the age of 76. She left her entire estate to Martin Luthor King (King amusingly did not know who Parker was when he was informed he inherited her estate). When King, himself, was killed a year later, her estate passed to the NAACP (as per her will). The NAACP still holds the copyrights on Parker?s works.

Interestingly enough, though, Parker never specified what to do with her remains after her death. Thus, Parker?s lawyer, Paul O?Dwyer, kept Parker?s ashes in his office for nearly TWO DECADES! At first, it wasn?t a matter of people forgetting, per se, so much as no one could agree exactly on what to do with them, so they just stayed there while people figured it out. Eventually, though, the last FIFTEEN YEARS of her ashes? time in O?Dwyer?s office were spent in a filing cabinet.

Eventually, the NAACP heard about the situation and built a memorial garden in 1988 at their national headquarters in Baltimore for Parker. A plaque read:

Here lie the ashes of Dorothy Parker (1893?1967) humorist, writer, critic. Defender of human and civil rights. For her epitaph she suggested, ?Excuse my dust?. This memorial garden is dedicated to her noble spirit which celebrated the oneness of humankind and to the bonds of everlasting friendship between black and Jewish people. Dedicated by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. October 28, 1988.

It remains there to this day.

POETRY LEGEND: Thomas Bowdler ?bowdlerized? Longfellow?s ?Wreck of the Hesperus? by editing ?bull? to ?gentleman cow.?

STATUS: False

Thomas Bowdler was a physican at the turn of the 19th Century who is much more famous for the work he did with his sister, Harriet, in editing the works of Shakespeare into a form that would make it appropriate for women and children to read. Bowdler recalled when he was a child and his father would entertain the family with the plays of Shakespeare, his father would surreptiously omit parts of the plays that he felt were inappropriate for the ears of his wife and children. Bowdler felt that many people would appreciate an actual text version on these omissions, so that they did not have to do the omitting on their own.

So Thomas and Harriet set out to edit Shakespeare (with Harriet taking the lead). Eventually roughly 10% of Shakespeare?s words had been expunged, with some of them replaced by other words and some words (and characters) omitted entirely. One of the most famous changes in the collection (titled The Family Shakespeare) was the edit made to Macbeth, where Lady Macbeth?s famous cry ?Out, damned spot!? was altered to ?Out, crimson spot!?

As you might imagine, even over 200 years ago their actiosn drew derision from the literary community, and soon the term ?bowdlerize? was coined to describe inelegant edits designed to cut out ?offensive? material.

As the story goes, one of the most egregious edits Bowdler ever made was when he edited a reference to a bull in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow?s classic poem, ?The Wreck of the Hesperus?

She struck where the white and fleecy waves
Looked soft as carded wool;
But the cruel rocks, they gored her side
Like the horns of an angry bull.

from ?bull? to ?gentleman cow.?

And so ?gentleman cow? has become a famous term for when someone is trying too hard to be inoffensive about a reference.

So, did this happen?

Nope.

You see, Longfellow?s poem came out a fully 17 years after Bowdler died! In fact, the actual wreck of the Hesperus (which inspired Longfellow) did not occur until 1839, 14 years after Bowdler?s passing!

Could someone else have bowdlerized Longfellow and come up with the ?gentleman cow? term? Certainly possible, but it is impossible that the person who did it was Thomas Bowdler.

POETRY LEGEND: Robert Lowell famously responded literally to a joking suggestion by famed poetry professor Allen Tate that Lowell could live in a tent on Tate?s yard.

STATUS: True

Robert Lowell, the father of ?confessional poetry? was one of the most celebrated poets in the history of American poetry. The Boston-born poet was the sixth U.S. poet laureate and a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

IH022407

Lowell originally studied at Harvard University, but he changed his mind when he met famed English author Ford Madox Ford at a party in Boston after Lowell?s second year in school. The Good Soldier novelist remarked that he was headed to go stay with famed poet Allen Tate (the SECOND U.S. poet laureate) in Ohio, where Tate and John Crowe Ransom were teaching at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

Lowell actually ended up in Ohio before Ford. This led to an amazing exchange between he and the Tate?s that Lowell later recounted to the Paris Review in 1961?

It?s a terrible piece of youthful callousness. They had one Negro woman who came in and helped, but Mrs. Tate was doing all the housekeeping. She had three guests and her own family, and was doing the cooking and writing a novel. And this young man arrived, quite ardent and eccentric. I think I suggested that maybe I?d stay with them. And they said, ?We really haven?t any room, you?d have to pitch a tent on the lawn.? So I went to Sears, Roebuck and got a tent and rigged it on their lawn. The Tates were too polite to tell me that what they?d said had been just a figure of speech. I stayed two months in my tent and ate with the Tates.

Eventually Lowell to dormitory housing and was soon on his way to a storied career in poetry.

Pretty amazing, huh?

Okay, that?s it for this week!

Arizona swingman Parrom shot in NY, school says (AP)

NEW YORK ? Arizona basketball player Kevin Parrom was shot and wounded this weekend while visiting family in New York City but is expected to be OK, the university and police said Sunday.

The shooting followed a dispute that occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday at a residence in the Bronx, said Officer Chris Pisano, who had no details on the dispute. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to his left hand and right knee and was taken to a hospital in stable condition, Pisano said.

No arrests have been made; the investigation continues.

The university said in a statement that Parrom, a Bronx native, had gone home to visit his mother, who is ill. The statement said he was shot but provided no details.

Wildcats coach Sean Miller said he has been in contact with Parrom and looks "forward to his return to Tucson and being back in class this week." Miller added, "Once we have more information, we'll be able to address his potential return to team activities."

One of Parrom's former coaches said the junior swingman is doing well.

Gary Charles, who coached Parrom on a youth travel team, told the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson that Parrom did not go into detail but assured him that the situation was not dire.

"He said: `Don't worry. I'm OK. I can walk. I'm good,'" Charles told the newspaper. "That was good enough for me."

Parrom, a 6-foot-6 reserve, averaged 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in the NCAA Tournament last season for a Wildcats team that advanced to the Elite Eight.

Catholic Culture : Latest Headlines : Jesuits publish special report ...

The Society of Jesus--the Church?s largest male religious institute, with 18,516 members--has issued a special report on ecology.

?Our commitment to follow Jesus Christ in poverty, the seriousness of the ecological crisis and the cry of the poor who suffer the consequences of environmental degradation calls us all to stop and reflect,? states the report, which was published by the Society?s social justice and ecology secretariat. ?Jesuits, members of the Ignatian family, and those responsible for our apostolic institutions are all invited to reflect seriously on the way in which our functional values driving our everyday decisions and actions remain consumerist at the core.?

?Creation?s groans, growing louder and louder as nature is destroyed, challenge us to adopt simpler lifestyles,? the report continues. ?In the fulfilment of this task we are inspired by many people worldwide who want to create a new world based on a just relationship with creation. We need a deep change of heart. This is the only radical way to face the present ecological challenge. We must, therefore, renew the sources of our Ignatian spirituality, a spirituality that invites us to acknowledge, give thanks and commit ourselves to the life present in creation.?

Questions over virus link to ME

Scientists who first linked chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as ME, to a virus have withdrawn some of their findings.

They have said some of their findings were based on "contaminated data".

Meanwhile, a study in Science claimed the virus could not be reliably detected in ME patients, even in the labs which originally made the link.

Understanding of chronic fatigue syndrome is poor. It may be many diseases and the causes are uncertain.

There was a sense of hope for many patients when a study published in Science in 2009 showed that DNA from a mouse virus, XMRV, was present in 67% of patients with the illness, but only 4% of the general population.

Yet other scientists around the world could not find evidence of the virus. Many researchers began to argue that the most likely explanation was contamination of the laboratory samples.

It led to Science asking the authors to withdraw their findings and it published an editorial "expression of concern" saying that the validity of the study was "seriously in question".

    CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

    • The disease is thought to affect some 250,000 people in the UK
    • Symptoms include extreme tiredness, problems with memory and concentration, sleep disturbances and mood swings
    • There is currently no accepted cure and no universally effective treatment
    • Source: ME Association

The authors have now issued a partial retraction after some of the scientists involved reported contamination, but this only calls into question the information in one table and two diagrams, not the rest of the paper and not the final conclusion.

One of the labs involved, the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Nevada, is standing by the conclusion. One of its lead researchers, Dr Vincent Lombardi, said it was "participating" in the retraction but: "We want to make it very clear that we are continuing the important work of studying retroviruses in association with ME/CFS and other similarly complex illnesses.

"WPI's more recent retroviral work, although still in the early stages of discovery, continues to warrant additional investigations."

    Meaningless

Dr Jonathan Stoye, virologist at the Medical Research Council National Institute of Medical Research in the UK, said: "I don't think this partial retraction has any meaning, it would have been nice to have a complete rather than a partial retraction.

"They're saying the rest of the paper still stands, but that is becoming increasingly difficult for them to maintain."

A fresh study on XMRV published in Science, which the researchers behind the original study participated in, again questioned the link.

Samples of blood were collected from 15 patients who had previously tested positive for XMRV, 14 of whom also had chronic fatigue syndrome, and from 15 patients without XMRV.

These samples were sent to nine laboratories, including two which had found the link previously. No lab knew which samples were from which patients.

Only two laboratories, the two which initially proposed the link, detected any cases of XMRV. However, the virus was detected at "similar rates" in both groups of patients, the study said.

The results from the two laboratories were also "inconsistent" even when testing blood from the same patient.

Dr Charles Shepherd, medical adviser to the ME Association said: "These are very emphatic negative or inconsistent findings from the Blood Working Group study, along with the retraction of some of the original supporting data that was published in Science.

"So it is now looking extremely unlikely that XMRV is either linked to ME/CFS or that it has a disease-causing role.

"Having had their hopes raised that a treatable component to ME/CFS had been identified, it's not surprising that people are becoming increasingly disappointed at the way things are turning out.

But it's too early to send out the scientific jury to make a final definitive decision on XMRV and ME/CFS - we still need the results from the other major multi-centre study on XMRV and ME/CFS being carried out in America by Prof Ian Lipkin."

I am hanging new curtains from floor to ceiling in my living room. I ...

    Kathy P:

If you go to the photo gallery at Smith and Noble (pick living rooms, then curtains/drapes) you will see a lot of pictures of drapes and how they are mounted with undertreatments. The items like woven shades and roman shades are mounted (usually inside mount) at window level. I did see two pictures where the sheers were at the same height as the drapery treatment.

I think it is really a matter of preference ? do you want to see the heading and top of the sheers? Then place them at window height. If not, I would go with the same height as the drapery. After all, the whole point of going to the ceiling is to make the windows and ceiling appear taller. You are creating a stopping point for the eye by putting sheers at the window level (outside mount).

You could see which you like better without totally committing. You might be able to use some tape (maybe a painter?s tape) or a couple of pushpins to hold the sheers at the two levels so you can see what it would look like.

Investing 101: Stocks Reaching New Highs with Institutional Buying ...

(Article by Becca Lipman. List compiled by Eben Esterhuizen, CFA. Data sourced from Fidelity)

Do you prefer to invest with the trend? If so the following list may be of interest to you.

Here we present a list of ten stocks that have demonstrated bullish momentum and met the following requirements:

    - Recently hit a new 52-week high
    - Significant levels of net purchases from institutional investors over the current quarter
    - Market cap over $300M

Before you dive into the list, take a moment to review the implications of these list requirements:

Momentum investing?aims to capitalize on the continuance of existing trends and the strength behind it. The stocks on this list demonstrate momentum by reaching their The 52-Week High.

The 52-Week High?is the highest price paid for a share of the company in the last 52 weeks (one year).

Institutional investors?are also known as "big money" investors or managers. They represent big pools of money such as investment banks, pension funds, mutual funds, hedge funds, endowment funds, etc. When they invest in stocks, they can invest hundreds of thousands of dollars or more at one time. These transactions, called "block trades," can have a significant effect on share prices.

Because institutional investors handle such large amounts of money, it is easy enough to assume that the big money managers know what they are doing -- or at the very least know more than the average investor. This is why these investors are also sometimes referred to as "smart money."

If institutional investors start investing in a company, regular investors can assume that some of the most talented analysts and money managers expect the company's share prices to increase over time. The stocks on our list are experiencing significant investment from big money.

Market Capitalization (Market Cap):?Market capitalization, commonly referred to as market cap, is the total market value of a company's outstanding shares. It can be thought of as a measure of company's size. It can be calculated by multiplying the number of shares by the current price of the shares. Companies with higher market cap are considered to have more trustworthy information because they have greater histories of profitability and data.

Hedge funds seem to think these names have more upside to price in. Do you agree?

breast cancer signs | Breast Cancer Informed

Breast cancer recurrence normally happens in the first three to five years after initial treatment of breast cancer. A local recurrence happens in the treated breast or near the mastectomy scar while a distant recurrence occurs somewhere else in the body. Common sites of recurrence are the lymph nodes, the bones, the liver and the lungs.

Breast changes that might signal a recurrence are a change in the size and shape of the breast, a mass or lump which may feel as a small pea and an area that is distinctly different from any other areas of the breast. Redness of the skin on the breast or the nipple, a change in the feel or appearance of the skin as well as skin dimpling are other signs of breast cancer recurrence. Fluid discharge from the nipple and thickening in or near the breast are other red flags for recurrence of the disease.

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of breasts and although it is common in women, it also affects men. It is the second most common cancer after lung cancer and it typically starts with a lump and if unchecked could spread beyond the breast. When this happens it will be called metastatic breast cancer and will affect areas such as the bones, the liver, lungs and the brain.

It is important for women to perform regular breast self-examination especially those who have already suffered from breast cancer. Breast cancer recurrence can be treated through surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal and radiation therapy.
